Commander's Orphanage: Tymaret's Lifegain Shanty

Commander / EDH Group Slug Lifegain Mono-Black

OnlyJank

Have you ever wondered why in every single card he's in, Tymaret is always screaming? It's because he's not screaming, he's singing.

And what is he singing you might add?

Well obviously a rivetting sea shanty about gaining life, because that's all this good for nothing commander is good for.

Okay that was a little over the top, but demigod Tymaret just doesn't seem to have the staying power in comparison with some of his other arisen siblings, as this card isn't much other than some graveyard hate and some lifegain.

OR IS IT

Building around this requires a lot of lifegain, a lot of ways to use the life we've gained to win (either by draining our opponents or triggering a card like Aetherflux Reservoir, and drawing a lot of cards and looking down at our opponent's puny life totals like the elitist scum we are.

Now, I hear you asking, why not use a mono-black commander that is perhaps a little bit more suited for the job, such as K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth, Kokusho, the Evening Star or Vilis, Broker of Blood instead?

Well it is the lowest costed legendary mono-black creature with gain life in its text, it serves as a guarunteed tempo play assuming you have at least two swamps ready, and it is the only card among the available who replaces draining opponents life, with draining their graveyards.

Cards such as K'rrik or Vilis require our life total to already be decent enough to play around with, while Kokusho has to hit the graveyard in order for his effect to go off, not a big deal for mono-black, but outside of the flavor of our strategy. Tymaret essentially serves as a budget The Scarab God, losing out on the stealing effect, but hating on the graveyard for 2 less mana, enabling our life gain strategy, and using his bard like songs to inspire us in battle.

But more importantly, in case you didn't read the title, we are on a trip to the Commander's Orphanage and we're changing the lives of all the abandoned commanders one at a time. Tymaret, despite being a literal demigod, only has THIRTEEN decks on EDHREC as of the writing of this description, and I believe it is time the shanty man got his dues.

Also, who else is gonna sing their shanties as they slay their enemies? Not K'rrik that's for sure.
