Mystic Gate Expedition in for Mystic Gate —March 15, 2018

So, I had the opportunity to be the first MtG customer for a new store that will be opening in April near my house, shout out to No Land Beyond of Baltimore, MD! I saw that a Mystic Gatefoil was available for a good price so I bought it to help support the shop. Besides, I really dislike the art for the Shadowmoor Mystic Gate, it looks like a Kithkin photobombed a painting. Speaking of which, I don't like Kithkin aesthetically, they've just got weird proportions. Also, swapped out the Khans Windswept Heath, Flooded Strandfor Onslaught Windswept Heath, Flooded Strand.

Looking at your landbase, is there a reason you're not playing Unclaimed Territory , Ancient Ziggurat, Exotic Orchard and Path of Ancestry ? They all seem potentially better than Gemstone Mine, Cascade Bluffs, Flooded Grove, Mystic Gate, Sunken Ruins.

Rian, re-reading my previous comment (now deleted) I think I made a simple explanation way too complicated. Let me re-try.

Is there a reason you're not playing Unclaimed Territory, Ancient Ziggurat, Exotic Orchard and Path of Ancestry?

  • Yes. It's because they're all strictly worse than Gemstone Mine and all the other 5 color lands I placed in the deck. This deck is designed to be the most efficient tribal sliver edh deck possible. The previous cards you mentioned ether come into play tapped (Path of Ancestry is too slow) OR are dependent on factors that are outside of my control. Basically, if I needed access to mana but i'm facing a mono red deck, then Exotic Orchard is of no use. If I need to play something that isn't a creature (and not colorless), then Unclaimed Territory, and Ancient Ziggurat are wasted slots.

None of the lands you mentioned are better than Gemstone Mine, Cascade Bluffs, Flooded Grove, Mystic Gate, or Sunken Ruins.

  • Why? Because the lands you mentioned have limitations based on factors entirely outside of your control. The filter lands and Gemstone Mine don't have such limiting factors. You can spend the mana they produce on anything your deck plays. Not just creatures - your mana options are not limited when you absolutely need to play something.

My thought was that you probably play at least one sliver per turn anyway (but I may be mistaken), in which case Unclaimed Territory guarantees that you have the right colors available to play those creatures and is always used to play creatures anyway, much like Sliver Hive and Cavern of Souls (that point could also be made about Ancient Ziggurat). In that case, the drawback of only producing colored mana for the purpose of casting creatures doesn't seem to be much of a drawback.

Furthermore Unclaimed Territory also produces colorless mana and can still be used to pay for the ability of Sliver Overlord or any other colorless mana-requirements. Therefore, at least in the case of Unclaimed Territory , it seems to do the job better than Gemstone Mine and the filterlands, since it produces all five colors of mana for your creatures, is mostly used to cast creatures or to pay for the ability of Sliver Overlord anyway and doesn't have a restricted lifespan.

That all depends on the premise though, that you play creatures/use Sliver Overlord fairly often. I agree that Exotic Orchard, Path of Ancestry and Ancient Ziggurat may cause some bumps in the early game that could be avoided with Gemstone Mine, although it seems like quite the drawback to me that it dies after three uses.

Hi LVL_666,

Just want to ask Training Grounds ability can work on Homing Sliver??

The mana discount ability from Training Grounds not only can work on creatures that already on battlefield??

Thank you.

AioriaxWingz: No it won't. The gatherer page ofr Training Grounds specifically rules this here:

"Training Grounds affects only creatures you control on the battlefield. The costs of activated abilities that work in other zones (such as cycling or unearth) wont be reduced."

One of the key give-aways here is that Training Grounds refers to "creatures", however when a sliver is in a player's hand, it is a creature card. Remember that until a creature is on the battlefield it is not considered a creature.

Rian "the drawback of only producing colored mana for the purpose of casting creatures doesn't seem to be much of a drawback."

I disagree. While guaranteeing that I have colored mana for creatures is good and all, the drawback of not having colored mana for anything else is far too costly. There are roughly 23 colored spells that aren't creatures in this deck- of which are my primary control spells and one of my wincons. If I don't have Chromatic Lantern or Nature's Lore or anything else to help get me the mana I need then that would set me back multiple turns. It's just not worth it.

I think you're losing sight of the bigger picture when it comes to Gemstone Mine and the Filterlands as there will be situations where playing a Sliver isn't the optimal choice. There are times when I want to hold back mana for a Counterspell, or play some removal at the end of an opponent's turn. You have a good argument for Unclaimed Territory. It is an excellent card, but in my opinion there just isn't any room for it in this deck.

enpc, thanks for answering AioriaxWingz's question. That leads me into another card that i've been thinking of testing out, and that would be New Perspectives. Combined with Homing Sliver (being in play that is) I could cycle out all of my slivers, placing them into the graveyard and bringing them all back using Patriarch's Bidding or Living End. For the time being i'll swap in New Perspectives for Rhystic Study. What're your thoughts on this enpc? Think it'll work?

Awesome page! My sliver deck is still a work in progress.I have yet to get my hand on a sliver queen =(

enpc says... #9

LVL_666: it doesn't seem like a bad idea. I have some reservations in that for most games, New Perspectives will feel like a 6 mana sorcery speed draw three cards. But as mentioned, the combo potential is solid. Obviously it is susceptible to graveyard hate but that will come down to reading the situation.

How about Cryptolith Rite? when both manasweft, gemhide not in first hand.

It'll be another way for mana source when u got bad luck or cant wait sliver tutor from Sliver Overlord

Mortlocke says... #11

Hey Vegnus, thanks for the card suggestion. Cryptolith Rite was previously suggested, but I didn't include it because I think I have plenty of mana rocks to compensate. Plus, this card is dependent on if I have creatures in play. If I were to get this card after a board wipe, it wouldn't have nearly as much impact as say a Sol Ring or Mana Crypt to help me regain a decent board state.

Thanks for commenting, do you have any more card suggestions? I'm sure there's always something out there i've missed.

Shout out to Hopedealer! You gave me my 200th upvote. Thank you! I'm well on my way to beating Tolarian Community College's Sliver Overlord deck. I'm trying to have the highest rated Sliver EDH deck on tappedout. Thanks for your support.

what do you think of Aether Vial in this deck? or Kindred discovery? or Aluren?Great deck!!

Mortlocke says... #14

JulesAristocrats, What do I think of Aether Vial, Kindred Discovery, or Aluren in this deck? Hmm, i'll give a response for each!

  • Aether Vial is a great card. Incredible card. Just not that great for this deck due to the highly varied converted mana cost for each Sliver in the deck. Lets break this down even further: I have 2 CMC Slivers, 11 CMC Slivers, 7 CMC Slivers, 5 CMC Slivers, and 5 CMC slivers. As you can see, the costs vary widely. Therefore, Aether Vial is likely to not be played to it's maximum potential. That card belongs in a modern tribal deck for sure.

  • Kindred Discovery is a good card, basically what I wish Synapse Sliver was. The only issue I have with it is it's CMC. It's so high! Worse yet, when you play the card you'll likely be tapped out and you'd have spent all that mana without influencing the board at all. That's one of the vital strategies to competitive commander is that every turn you make an impact to influence the board. That High CMC makes it less likely to do so.

  • Aluren is also a very good card, just not very good in this deck. I'll just refer you to my input about Aether Vial. Too many varied costs.

Also, thank you for the compliment. This deck is my baby! My one and only competitive deck, and the icing on the cake is that it's with all my favorite cards.

I've admired this deck from afar for a while now, great build. I certainly don't have any recommendations as it looks like you've put a whole bunch of thought into your choices, but I'm curious about a few Overlord staples omissions. Specifically, Unnatural Selection & Heartstone. Did you find them superfluous/under powered or did they simply go against the grain from your main strategy?

February 3, 2018 7:30 p.m.

and bloom tender? ;D

February 3, 2018 7:47 p.m.

Mortlocke says... #17

To all, sorry about taking so long in responding. Thanks for the upvotes and attention!

  • Forkbeard, thank you for the compliments. I've put alot of time and effort into this deck, all I can say is just thank you. Now, as for your question the answer is that I cut both Unnatural Selection + Heartstone in order to make room for more control elements in this deck. The previously mentioned cards are very niche, and creature specific when it comes to their uses. Therefore they aren't very useful outside of a select few situations- I need cards that can be useful in a whole variety of situations, and in this case I made room for control oriented cards. Full disclosure here, I swap Teferi's Protection with ether Rhystic Study, Damnation or Swan Song depending on the meta.

The grain is whatever as far as i'm concerned. This is a competitive control sliver deck. The only constraint I put on this deck is that I can only have Slivers because when it comes to tribal flavor, only "Sliver" will do.

  • JulesAristocrats, Bloom Tender is an awesome card...but it's not a sliver. Therefore it will simply not do. So, I guess the reasoning behind that is that it just doesn't fit my aesthetic that i'm trying to build with this deck. That reason is kind of arbitrary, so here is a better one: it's not tutorable via Sliver Overlord, therefore i'd have to waste one of my tutor cards to get it when I could use said tutor card to get a wincon like Paradox Engine or Mana Echoes.

Woah, the coding on this page is trippy, would love to see how it was done. If you have the time, could you post some of it on my wall?

IAmTheWraith trippy, huh? I thought it was more neat and organized...goes to show what I know! lol. What about the coding do you find trippy? I tried to make it seem easy to use, but at the same time unique.

Idk, it is a little hard to look at once youve been searchin the site for about an hour or so. your eyes have to adjust for about a minute or so. I currently just started learning the language for this site, it will become my third programming language (the more the merrier), and probably my most useful. I love the evolution of this deck so far, and the page is great.

IAmTheWraith, I didn't the difference between my deck page and the default layout of Tappedout was that dramatic. I was going for more of a mix between that which is familiar and something unique. Thank you for the compliments, and i'll give you some of the page's code- However, I always have to say that you have to be careful when doing custom scripts for your decks here. This isn't exactly a "feature" of the site, so it's really on you to be responsible and not open up vulnerabilities that will give malware or whatever a potential attack vector.

Shapers' Sanctuary, lightning greaves, swiftfoot boots, call to the kindred, mimic vat, consecration sphynx, snapcaster mage, cyclonic rift. Just some options.

mrlucky131313, thank you for the card suggestions, also if you didn't know you can tag cards using the following code [ [insert card name here w/o spaces in brackets] ]. Now, as for your suggestions here's my input:

  • Shapers' Sanctuary: Interesting card, but it relies too heavily on opponents wanting to rely on targeted removal to be consistently useful. It's a nice deterrent card, but in EDH I think opponents wouldn't be too hung up over me drawing a single card if they can remove a pesky creature.

  • Lightning Greaves/Swiftfoot Boots: Awesome card, and perfect for a big beefy creature that needs haste and protection. These cards however seem a bit redundant as I have both Heart Sliver + Blur Sliver in the deck. Crystalline Sliver also provides much needed protection for all slivers as opposed to just one that's equipped. The icing on the cake however is the fact that all of the previously mentioned slivers are tutorable ala the Commander.

  • Call to the Kindred: Awesome card, but it's too expensive cmc wise for me to want to run it. Additionally, it's entirely dependent on the presence of creatures to actually be worthwhile. I wish it was on a sliver. I'd love it if they put this card on a Sliver. I think this card was once in the deck, but it was cut to make room for better options.

  • Mimic Vat: I'm not so sure about this one. If you didn't notice, i'm running strictly Sliver tribal here and uh...I wouldn't know what to do with this one. Maybe you could explain how it'd be of use in this deck?

  • Consecrated Sphinx/Snapcaster Mage: These are not slivers. Therefore, they have no place here in the hive. Now, if Wizards would produce some new slivers with these abilities? Then i'd be all about them.

  • Cyclonic Rift: Read my decklist, it's already in lol. In fact, i'd argue that all blue EDH decks worth their merit have this card already.

Also, this is shameless...but a +1 would be most appreciated.
