Comical Cromat

Commander / EDH

Hausar

Welcome to my 5-colour deck featuring the old school Illusion, Cromat

When Ikoria came out and showed off the comic-styled art for all the Mutate cards I thought they were gorgeous. After browsing all the 5-colour commanders, I found Cromat to be the closest thing to being able to pull it off. By making the deck 5-colour I was able to fit in all the Mutate cards (barring a few which are just terrible in the deck like Huntmaster Liger, Necropanther and Regal Leosaur). It isn't the most powerful deck in the world but when you get to stack multiple Mutate triggers, fun ensues!

The key to this deck is to find a 'Host' creature to Mutate onto. These creatures will either have Hexproof, Regenerate or Indestructible. This should make it safe to start Mutating onto it without running the risk of having our gameplan disrupted. From there, just stack multiple Mutates onto our Host and let the triggers commence all while enjoying the fantastic art and admiration of our fellow players!

Outside of the above gameplan, we have a decent ramp package to get us going, favouring 'any mana' cards rather than CMC. Heartless Summoning is a secret MVP of this package, allowing us super cheap Mutations for a tiny -1 -1 reduction. Being a 5-colour deck we have a huge array or removal tools to play with so I picked a good selection of Exile/Boardwipes to keep our opponents in check. If all else fails, just win with Maze's End!

Now onto the decks weaknesses. Being more of a gimmicky deck it struggles against higher power level decks who will just outright win before you can get going. Since we stack a single creature, go-wide strategies can get around us with little trouble. Finally, having to run such a huge variety of Mutate cards means we have little room of other important stuff like protection cards. Negatives aside, in a casual playgroup, it's a cool deck to play. Did I mention how awesome it looks?

Thanks for checking out my Cromat deck. This was my first time building a 5-colour deck so I've probably missed some obviously powerful cards. If I did, let me know! If you liked the deck, please feel free to check out my others below:
