Maybeboard

This deck has been relocated to Moxfield: This list is now outdated.

This is my rendition of the poor savant that keeps get slaved to the 99 of the new artifact based pre-cons.

Tactics and Methods

First and foremost, the thing everyone cares about "how do you win with it?" The two core avenues are either to assemble the infinite or swarm with tokens. The infinite in this deck is both large in number of cards needed and easily destroyed. To get it out of the way, A version of the combo is: Dross Scorpion + Trading Post + Jhoira's Familiar + Foundry Inspector + Perilous Myr + Cathodion . There are other ways to achieve a similar outcome with things like Reckless Fireweaver , etc... The critical cards are the Dross Scorpion and Trading Post if either of these are exiled you can no longer go infinite. (If you have a Sensei's Divining Top you can create an additional winning combo.)

Now comes the more difficult part, welding this monstrosity together. The easiest and intended pathway forward is to make use of your second hand, I mean graveyard. Using Daretti, Scrap Savant and the other cards listed as "Dumpster Divers" your going to fill your graveyard with, well, everything. Don't be to afraid to throw some lands away either. The land balance is pretty decent and often I find it's not hard to get and stay ahead on the mana curve. Burnished Hart , Wayfarer's Bauble , and Solemn Simulacrum are fantastic for dumping that sweet, sweet land early so you can get to the good stuff.

The general rule for the deck is "when id doubt, rummage out!" Once' you've filled your graveyard with plenty of trinkets, dump them out using Scrap Mastery . Already ahead, use Saheeli's Directive to go get even more things! Or, if you've got a bunch of things like Ichor Wellspring and Wurmcoil Engine then maybe Indomitable Creativity . Any of these can be showstoppers or at least pull you closer to closing things out.

Weakness/Issues

  • The deck likes to solitaire quickly, but you can end up in a durdly solitaire loop with a ton of little value things and only minor progress to victory. Just be aware for the enjoyment of everyone in the pod.

  • Limited threat interaction. You only have a few board wipes and two-and-a-half spot removers ( Unstable Obelisk , Spine of Ish Sah , and Perilous Myr ).

  • Self mill. While you can rebuild after a board wipe, constant wipes and rummaging can quickly burn through cards leading to a rather fast end (also be wary of Nekusar, the Mindrazer like decks). A possible solution would be to use Elixir of Immortality .

  • Graveyard hate. The best strategy is to simply play more conservative. That said don't be afraid to burn your mana grabbing cards, and try to dig for your spot removers or board wipes to stop the problem. You can lose some of those mana rocks to go get some cards. It's going to be your only way to answer the problem if someone else doesn't.

The maybeboard are cards that I'm looking at possibly slotting in. I'm only human after all, and I don't know all the cards/combos out there. My current ideas are below, but I'm looking for advice...

Hazoret's Monument or Cursed Mirror -> Mimic Vat

Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge <-> Treasure Nabber (compy meta -> Treasure Nabber, casual -> Gadrak)

Triplicate Titan -> Phyrexian Triniform

The another major change that could be made is mana tuning using Wastes in place of some of the mountains to max your possible value with Forsaken Monument . (I haven't done this yet due to concerns about meeting the cost for Saheeli's Directive and Indomitable Creativity consistantly.)

The Acquire board isn't really an acquire board its more of a "if I had all the cards in the world" board.

Summary So, as I've commented on previously one of the upgrades that can be done is to transition some of the mountains to Wastes. I've been trying to figure out a method of calculating the "optimal" amount of colorless lands. The idea I have come up with for figuring it out is to create a kind of weighted value for the lands. It's easier for me to explain with Math. If this scares you can just skip over it.

First Sum up all the pip types (symbols in the mana value and ,, etc...):

Red (): 26

Generic(): 207

Then divide the generic colorless by 6. This is because there are 6 different color types that can be used for generic mana.

Generic*: 34.5

Now I should be possible to figure out roughly how much of each land type I can use, by summing the to number new number for generic mana and the colored pips. Then divide each group by the total sum.

26 + 34.5 = 60.5

Red 26/60.5 = 0.43 or 43%

Generic 34.5/60.5 = 0.57 or 57%

Theoretically, this means it that my land base can handle considerably more colorless lands without compromising it's ability to function properly. This number could also be considered a fudge factor for land minimums. Meaning that so long as you satisfy the basic percentages the other land types you use in the "generic" group will have limited effect on performance. I haven't gotten enough road time to confirm this, and I don't know how well this holds up with a deck that contains more than one color. Additionally, I have not figured out an easy method of including mana sources other than lands or lands that produce more than one mana. Let me know if I'm just making harder than it needs to be, or if you have tried this and how it worked out. I would interested to see the results.
