Why do we play Circu?

Welcome to CEDH, a format of turn 1-4 kills, fast combos, counters and other nonsense. Generally people like heavy combo decks and ways to win fast. But if you're the type of player who wants to enjoy the game a little longer than the rest, this deck may be right for you. Circu wins through top deck manipulation until the point you find your own combo.

How to Play

The gist of the deck is simple, but executing the playstyle is the interesting part. There are two ways to start your opening hand. For one, we would like to see either Dramatic Reversal or Isochron Scepter and a tutor to attempt an early combo. Or, we want to draw an opening hand with some form of lantern effect, and a way to remove the top card from libraries. Partnering this with a form of counterspell to avoid quick turn 1-3 losses is important. Seeing the top card, and having something like Codex Shredder, makes it so whenever an opponent vampiric or some other tutors, we can easily remove whatever has been placed on top. This style makes it very difficult for your opponents to set up for game winning combos. This requires some knowledge of what to watch out for in the format for removing threats before they reach an opponents hand.

Deck Under-themes

Along with top deck manipulation the deck has a theme on denying resources and card draw. Uba Mask, Notion Thief and Narset, Parter of Veils all help deny your opponents the cards they need to win. Combo this with some well timed counterspells, and you are off to the races to win in the mid game.

What we are missing.

There are a few cards that are not in the deck that could be extremely beneficial, but unless you are a millionaire, you probably shouldnt buy. Chains of Mephistopheles, Timetwister and Imperial Seal are shown in many CEDH lists. They all present amazing benefits to the deck, but if you don't have money burning a hole in your wallet, they are not necessary for the deck to function.

Winning the Game

Plan One

Circu wins through combo. The first and best option to do this, is the Isochron Scepter and Dramatic Reversal loop. We do not need to generate infinite mana to do this, just 2 colorless mana to repeat the ability with Circu on board. This will allow us to infinitely exile mill our opponents out so they die on upkeep draw. If somehow the isochron Scepter hits our graveyard we have ways to bring it back, but this is not our only way to victory.

Plan Two

Mystic Forge, Sensei's Divining Top and Helm of Awakening allow us to draw our entire deck, place down Laboratory Maniac and win.

In Conclusion

There are a few other ways to make it to victory, but these are the few we will rely on most. There are fun tricks involving counterbalance and cards that allow you to manipulate your top card as well as other deck tecks. It is a very interesting deck to play, obviously not the strongest in CEDH, but can be fun and lead to interesting plays/choices. I hope you enjoy the list, and have fun denying your playgroup their resources/combos.
