Goodnight Sweet Rhino, Prince of Blink —Oct. 26, 2020

After many years (7 to be exact), I've made the difficult decision to replace Roon with Chulane as the leader of this ETB festival. I held off as long as possible before caving to the simple fact that Chulane provides more immediate value than slow, durdle-y Roon. After a test play, the deck immediately felt and played better with Chulane in the zone and that was that. I still really enjoy the ETB theme and Chulane allows for the deck to function as is, he simply adds more gas than good 'ol Ron ever did.

Ron, you ridiculous rhino man. You provided me with many, many unforgettably outrageous matches. Take a bow sweet rhino. I'll leave my original deck description here for posterity & I'll be resetting the comments while I'm at it:

Ladies and gentlemen, here's Ron.

Because ETB effects are badass & rude at the best of times, why not take advantage of a rhinoceros general that can repeatedly blink/flicker a myriad of ETB jerks? The name of the game here is to control the board and frustrate your opponents into submission.

It tends to teeter into the durdle spectrum but overall the fun outweighs the durdle factor. Suggestions and comments welcome.

Ron

"I will stand outside my tiny tower home that is too small for a grown ass rhinoceros & I will look & be mad as hell while I hold my crystal staff thing in the air for a sec so the sun can shine through it & you will disappear then reappear & you will piss off my friend & he will probably rage scoop!"

Have you considered swapping out Duplicant for Agent of Treachery? For one extra mana you get to keep a permanent AND card draw after about 2 rounds

Interesting! I've never seen Agent of Treachery before, definitely a cool card. The creature exile factor on Duplicant is nice, but I like that AoT hits any permanent - it really fits the overall control theme of this deck. My only worry is that steep casting cost, but I have a couple of high cast cards in this deck that kind of stick out as clunky and off theme: Avenger of Zendikar + Craterhoof Behemoth. Rather than subbing Duplicant, I'm debating getting rid of those 2 high CC bombs which would clear the way for AoT and something else.

You've got me thinking here Sillyprawn, good suggestion.

Cool! I’m glad you like it. Another one I like, which has performed pretty well, has been Scroll of Fate especially given the high cmc of our thicc boiz. Free permanent with Thassa and Soulherder also which is pretty neat.

Oh and another one I’ve considered is Stunt Double instead of Clever Impersonator effectively functions as a restoration angel also.

The flash on Stunt Double is nice, but I like the versatility of Clever Impersonator. For example, I've used it to get 2 Strionic Resonator's going before.

Hi Zamutx - I really didn't see any auto includes from Jumpstart and the deck is running nicely as is for now. Noble Hierarch is getting a reprint in Double Masters so that may get added if the price takes a hit.

As for main wincons, complete and utter control of the table is the name of the game. Between the 'control' and 'removal' sections with repeatable effects from the 'ETB x2' + 'blink' categories, you can probably see how it can spiral. DEN soulbound with Mystic Snake is a problem for most. No attack phases ever with Stonehorn Dignitary neuters loads of decks, as does Meddling Mage for general-centric builds. Similarly, you'd be surprised at how many games Lavinia of the Tenth has won me. Bounce an entire board back with Venser, Shaper Savant. All this control makes Venser, the Sojourner's ultimate a legit possibility, usually an auto scoop. Anyway, you probably get the idea here. I will caution that if you're looking for a quick fight, this deck is not the route to take. Games can be lengthy and durdly and that's why I've kept Crater-win in here as a mercy kill option.

Thanks for explaining, yea only card i was wondering was Emiel the Blessed from Jumpstart. Any sac outlets for Reveillark + Karmic Guide + Venser potential combo? unneeded probably. And was wondering any reason u don't run something like Walking Ballista for a mana dump, for a DEN + Peregrine Drake Combo? Just wondering, but i like the addition of voidslime and dissolve like effs with roon with the new ruling. And Lastly i was wondering what do you normally get with Archaeomancer and Spellseeker? Assuming wins come from raw value most of the time.

Ah yes, the unicorn! I actually really like that card and Eldrazi Displacer redundancy would be great, but couldn't decide what to cut. Archaeomancer is the poor man's Snapcaster Mage but I almost prefer the repeatable recursion Archaeomancer allows for. My go to target is usually Cyclonic Rift, but she's a handy toolbox blink target for snagging whatever is needed at the moment - counterspell, removal, blink etc.

So far I've avoided most infinite combos for meta reasons, but I could think of adding a few for the sake of closing games.
