Welcome back Thassa —Jan. 25, 2020

Really liking the fresh suite of Theros Beyond Death God cards & Thassa, Deep-Dwelling is a wonderful fit here. Swapping out Restoration Angel to make room for Thassa - I'll miss the surprise factor RA has but I prefer the reliability and additional control that Thassa brings to the deck.

Archiving the comments while I'm here. Thanks to all that have stopped by and given their 2 cents.

Why not run Mirror Entity to combo: Karmic Guide + Mirror Entity + Reveillark ?

There is also Mangara of Corondor and Sundial of the Infinite to use Roon as a way to permanently exile things.

There is also Meddling Mage for a-hole moves.

Perplexing Chimera is a fun way to change the game, where you can always get your stuff back, and your Chimera to steal more stuff, like an interesting Gilded Drake.

Thought-Knot Seer works with the Deadeye and Drake combo to mill everyone on the spot to win instantly.

Here is my ideal list, which I've been slowly building towards in real life: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/roons-goons-ideal/

Very interesting ideas isaaccclark - You've given me lots to consider! I'll have to check out your decklist, thanks for the suggestions.

Have you ever considered Wickerbough Elder and Ixidron? I run these as tutorable answers to Torpor Orb and Hushwing Gryff while still providing synergy with Roon. I also love Ixidron with something like Ghostway as morphed creatures return face-up when blinked.

I used to run Wickerbough Elder and ended up swapping it out for Reclamation Sage which has been more efficient in my experience. Ixidron is a really interesting card and I'm tempted to test it out.

Thanks for the suggestions Beebles!

Could you please describe some interactions in this deck? Also...any chance you could provide some budget options?

Hi Azergyzhoul. The deck hinges around a variety of creature ETB value + flicker/blink effects to control or lock out the table until you frustrate your opponents to death. I typically tutor for whatever ETB trigger I need - ramp, removal, protection etc. There's not much more to it than that, but here's a few interactions that come to mind...

  • Panharmonicon allows you to double down on all the ETB effects. I'll be adding Mirage Mirror soon to double down on the double downs (will also work well with Strionic Resonator)!
  • Deadeye Navigator is a famous combo enabler. He pairs well with most ETB creatures, but he's particularly potent with a creature like Peregrine Drake (a less greedy Palinchron) as that cute little Soulbond will grant you infinite mana.
  • Birthing Pod does a lot of work in this deck. Chaining Dryad Arbor->Birds of Paradise->Coiling Oracle->Wood Elves->Solemn Simulacrum and finally into Reveillark in order to recur your previously sac'd Pod fodder is pretty damn efficient. That's just 1 Pod chain example, it's a very effective way to tutor up any answer required.

  • It would take a while to go over budget options, simply look at the cards that are here and think of a cheaper card that will provide a similar effect. A lot of the $ value is in the land base, so you could chop the cost by running cheaper land alternatives. If there's a card replacement or two in particular that you're struggling with, let me know and I can help you out.

Have you looked into Restoration Angel, and Felidar Guardian? They are really good since they play toward what the deck wants to do. That and if you pod a 3 drop, you can get felidar guardian and blink the pod to pod away another creature! Also, I tend to stay away from cards like Ghostly Flicker, and that's because they do nothing to an empty board state. I'm also a huge advocate of using Ashnod's Altar to combo with reveilark, karmic guide, and a creature with 2 or less power, and if you add Ashnod's altar, get Minion Reflector, it combos well with the reveillark/karmic guide combo I stated acting very similar to Kiki Jiki and deceiver exarch/zealous conscripts.

I hear what you're saying TaegukTheWise, however I ended up removing Restoration Angel for the exact reason you mentioned re. Ghostly Flicker et al - it requires a board state/relevant creature. I also found that the redundancy simply wasn't needed and opted for ETB creatures that had more damaging effects. That said, I like your thoughts around using Felidar Guardian on Birthing Pod, that's an interesting interaction! Good thinking with Ashnod's Altar + Minion Reflector too, definitely going to mull that one over and may try to squeeze those in.

Cards like Ghostly Flicker is not comparable to a creature like Restoration Angel. Think about the two in their worst case scenarios: One is a top deck dud on an empty board that does nothing but sit in your hand, the other can turn into a surprise blocker/attacker in a pinch. Creatures with spells on them are usually so much better than the instant/sorcery counterpart since they are bodies that do something rather than go into the grave after being played. Restoration Angel is miles above cards like Momentary Blink. Also Restoration Angel combos with Felidar Guardian, Panharmonicon and a draw/mill creature like Jace's Mindseeker, or Thought-Knot Seer. I have this combo detailed in my Roon deck, but essentially it allows you to continuously blink them to mill your opponents.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from now and I'm reconsidering my stance. Interesting combo with your blink creatures + Panharmonicon.

    TaegukTheWise says... #14

I don't know if anyone else has found these combos yet, so I figured I would share! Plus I find that because I have creatures like Restoration Angel in the deck I don't need to summon Roon that much, meaning you get to focus more on assembling your blink targets rather than needing to dump 5 mana into a 4/4 that does nothing for a turn. I usually play him when I really need him, or I need a big body in a tight spot, which I think is how you should play Roon, but I digress. Also, have you tried Cathars' Crusade? Its a really mean enchantment in a blink/flicker deck, especially when you have Panharmonicon! I would also implore you to put Growing Rites of Itlimoc in there as well (or a Gaea's Cradle if you have one), but at this rate I'm just spouting "turn you deck into a copy of mine" so I'll stop with the suggestions. I could also shamelessly promote my deck in your comments instead of adding suggestions! XD

Growing Rites of Itlimoc  Flip is just solid, I have it in my Rhys + Rashmi decks & agree that it would slide in nicely here too. Do you find that the Cathars' Crusade +1's stick? It seems counter intuitive with all the flicker/blink effects - don't get me wrong, I realize that if you have a bunch of creatures out it's going to benefit the rest of the horde when you play or blink a creature, but effects like Ghostway & Eerie Interlude would remove the counters from all creatures. I think it works best in a beat down style deck, but I pilot my Roon brew in a control/lock manner. Sounds like you've had success with it though and I like the interaction with Panharmonicon, that's pretty wild (that card just continues to surprise hey?).

I chuckled at the "turn your deck into a copy of mine" comment - that's the best part about Tappedoud really, sharing strategies that have worked or that you're excited to share. The sheer amount of ideas and deck honing assistance I've had from other people sharing their ideas on this site has vastly improved my decks + made me a better player, I appreciate it.

No problem, glad I could share and not be turned down like Jon Snow. From the look of the deck it does imply you either play in a very competitive meta or you just like being That Guy, both stances I can very much appreciate. Panharmonicon is a commander staple for a reason, it's basically magic R&D's love letter to commander from standard!

Sorry, last bit from me on Cathars' Crusade. Like I said, I tend to stay away from cards like Ghostway as much as possible, I can see the deck philosophy though. I figured since you had Craterhoof Behemoth that you would appreciate the crusade a bit more. Besides, crusade still triggers when your creatures enter play, so it honestly doesn't matter if you blink them all away, you still get the +1 counters for each creature entering your board, getting the counters to stick isn't the problem. Think about it this way: you would mass blink at least 1 time a game because of cards like Wrath of God, so it isn't as bad as you would think, especially if you are selective and strategic in how you blink your creatures and have them re-enter. At the end of the day, I still recommend the crusade, even though you mass blink to avoid board wipes, they still become bigger creatures than they normally would, and if you did ghostway them they all come into play on the end phase, so they all gat the same treatment (10 creatures leave, all 10 come back with 10 more power and toughness), you get huge creatures to finish the game, almost like a wacky craterhoof that stays longer (depending on how huge your board state is anyway). So if anything its making me want to start wanting to run cards like ghost way, despite my grievances.

I see. Yeah, Cathars' Crusade could be a good finisher here, especially with Avenger of Zendikar in the mix. I'll think about adding it!

Did you ever try Faerie Artisans to get other players ETB effects when they play their creatures? Maybe not as good as the clones you already run?

What about Frilled Mystic for Mystic Snake #2? It's not fetchable off recruiter but maybe worth a card slot. Not sure how often you actually get into positions where you can keep bouncing a Mystic Snake to counter things that threaten your board state.

Do you ever feel like you need more card draw? Looks like you only have 2-3 cards that draw you cards. Every try or consider Cloudblazer , Prime Speaker Zegana , Rhystic Study etc? I do like your inclusion of Guardian Project in the deck.

Not only have I not tried Faerie Artisans , I didn't know it existed until you posted it, haha. Certainly a fun and possibly political card, but I personally prefer having control over what I'm cloning versus relying on what my opponents cast.

I like Frilled Mystic a lot. Mystic Snake is DEN's BFF so having some snake redundancy in here wouldn't hurt, that's a good call.

I am running a little light for card draw. That said, I have so much recursion & tutor in here that it's usually not a problem if I'm needing to replenish my mit. Mulldrifter is a house here so do I like the idea of having a second option with Cloudblazer . I ran PSZ for a while but ended up swapping her out due to her casting cost + reliance on my board state.

Some good ideas here Patryn - I'm definitely thinking about slotting in Frilled Mystic + Cloudblazer , cheers!

A few more thoughts for you. I've been planning a Roon deck of my own which yours has greatly influenced and came across things you might want to consider:

Alchemist's Refuge - I decided on this over the Arcane Lighthouse as I don't envision hexproof being a huge issue but I can see the pros and cons to both.

Elvish Rejuvenator - I like this over Farhaven Elf. I ended up with only 5 basic lands and with Solemn Simulacrum competing to fetch basics I like the Rejuvinator better. It is possible you could fail to find but in a situation where you have infinite bounce you can get all your lands into play.

Knight of Autumn - I like this over or in addition to Reclamation Sage. More options are always good and the mana cost shouldn't be an issue.

Survival of the Fittest - This card is just amazing with the creature theme of the deck and you can even discard something into Karmic Guide and then resurrect the card you discarded.

Sylvan Library - I like this over Sensei's Divining Top just because it's free every turn and you can draw extra cards for life when you need to.

Thanks very much for the deck props & suggestions davENGR. You're right, Trostani's Summoner brings a lot of value but I've always shied away from it due to the casting cost. In fact, I believe I even slotted it in here once and opted to switch it back out in favour of efficiency. I love Selvala's Stampede ! Such a fun & underrated card, I run it in 2 of my other decks (Atarka + Dosan). Such a great bluff card and both options are win/win, it really surprises people whenever it gets played. That's a solid Roon build addition, good call.
