Chulane, Teller of Tales wants cheap creatures to enter the battlefield so he can let you do the two best things 1) draw cards and 2) maybe ramp. Ideally, you'll be doing cool things like winning with Laboratory Maniac or maybe drawing into Approach of the Second Sun . To buy time to do these cool things, why not cast a bunch of cheap hatebears and mana dorks? The hatebears will slow opponents down to let you get your engines, like Intruder Alarm , Aluren , etc. online. While you're drawing many cards and playing all the lands, everyone else will be p l a y i n g f a i r m a g i c the way Richard Garfield, Ph.D. intended.
