STILL SPELL SLANGIN’ —March 15, 2021

Deck Dorks:

Cheapskate Talrand is still slangin’

In the past 8 months, I have played Cheapskate Talrand up and down my budget circuit, casual circuit, and cEDH circuit. It’s doing just fine and I am pleased with the results.

The deck has incredible value, monetarily and synergistically.

My biggest criticism of the deck is that it is overly-oppressive in 2 player. This much nope dominates.

Conversely, in larger group, it is vulnerable to hate-out, especially by fast aggro. (Typical mono-blue problems.) That means lay low and win out of nowhere in round one, then expect to play Drake aggro in round 2 ftw.

After many months of play, I am considering 2 additions: Thwart and Flusterstorm. Both provide very strong defense for the polymorph/leveler/thoracle win con. Please advise as to what you would swap. (Keep the budget in mind. Thanks.)

Always feel free to make recommendations, and keep slangin’ spells!

Delta_ninjer, I’m glad you like it! It slaps plenty hard. It tends to eek out a surprise win on game one, but once your opponents identify the win con, it becomes more difficult to pull off if they have any decent interaction. Make sure you ample counters before executing the win con. Angel’s Grace and Trickbind and will lose you the game.

Once your deck starts escalating, check out the upgrade to this deck. I’ve bumped the budget up to $100, and it’s far, far better: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/cheapskate-talrand-ver-15-100-edition/?cb=1610377496

I still prefer this version though :)

Please come back with updates! I want to hear how the deck performs in your meta.
