A note from 0rc on a increased budget build (link) —Jan. 11, 2021

Hello, All:

Over the months, I have received multiple requests on what to swap out to increase the value of the deck. I have also received feedback regarding the inclusion of alternate win conditions, such as Dramatic Scepter, which has unusually good synergy in a deck such as this, but is (unfortunately) only feasible with an increased budget.

Below is a link to an updated version of this list that provides for an increased ($100) budget with the inclusion of the Dramatic Scepter combo:

https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/cheapskate-talrand-ver-15-100-edition/?cb=1610377496

(Note: the above decklist is not otherwise publicly listed at this time, except as is linked above.)

You will observe that adding $25 to the budget of this deck changes it dramatically (pun intended), but it does not change the flavor or spirit of the deck. That said, it is not a bare-bones $75 deck either.

I intend to continue playing the $75 version of this deck, as the challenge of brewing a competitive deck with only $75, not a cent over (and certainly not $100), is the allure of Cheapskate Talrand for me.

I will also continue to update Cheapskate Talrand as new options arise, but at this time it appears up-to-date.

Special thanks to Crazymadhatter for throwing out good ideas.

THANK YOU ALL FOR MAKING THIS THE #3 OVERALL TALRAND DECK ON T/O!!!

Love love LOVE the deck, I will now be building something similar for sure as a fun budget option! The wincon is utterly delightful!

Food for thought another alternative and relatively budget (monetarily as cheap as the dead-eye if not cheaper) is to throw in isochron scepter and dramatic reversal (less than $8!!!). You are running enough mana rocks that it could go infinite, as all you need is 2 mana to make infinite drakes with Talrand (just need sol ring or any 2 rocks). You might need to throw in one more mana rock to make it a little more consistent but you honestly should have enough already (if anything, something cheap like worn powerstone would be good). At 3 mana you make infinite mana too, and with a natural mana dump like capsize you already have a nice little alt wincon already situated in your deck. Add in Blue sun's for even more options if you want. Or you can cast a bunch of spells while having infinite mana, possibilities are endless. Combine this with alter of the brood for infinite mill.

You can also infinitely mill with alter of the brood and snap on an isochron scepter, you can target your own drake.

Snap on isochron with Talrand out also means you can make sure no opponent has any creatures while having an army of drakes! So isochron serves both as a alternate wincon and a value piece/removal of any creatures.

Snap on Isochron also gives you infinite mana if you have played high tide that turn, which means you can even have ANOTHER alternative win with a Capsize lock on everyone, or just an absurd amount of mana. With capsize you will have as many drakes as your opponents had permanents on the field so you should easily win after that.

If all else fails if you are playing against control is slap any 2 mana counterspell on the isochron scepter to try and control the game and have it ready to protect your own combo when you do try and go off or stop someone else from doing the same thing. You can always bounce it back later with capsize if you are holding any of the other combo pieces I've mentioned.

And for the really spicy play slap on high tide to isochron scepter for ungodly amounts of mana a turn if you have a lot of big spells you are dying to play.

If you want to spend just a little more and maybe up this to $100 budget deck (I understand its a budget deck with a goal limit at 75 but its an alternative wincon possibility and I don't know if you are calculating exactly with alt wincons, I think it comes out to just under 100), you can put a nexus of fate in as well, with merchant scroll on isocron you only need 9 mana for infinite turns (can also use beacon of tomorrow and mystical tutor).

Isochron gives you several alternative wincons (depends if you add the extra turn effects with a slightly higher budget) without ever taking away your original wincon since it doesn't require any additional creatures, and without the time cards shouldn't break the bank on your budget, all while providing massive utility! It also only takes up 2 slots in the deck for the traditional deck list, which is pretty sweet value!

I would like to correct some of my previous comments, I was apparently still in the old days of paradox engine shenanigans and totally forgot you can't run it anymore, just got to excited (My play group still allows Paradox Engine since it didn't need to be banned in the first place but that's an entirely different argument I don't need to get into here, to each their own). Obviously snap + isochron scepter on its own doesn't make infinite mana, I apparently didn't drink enough coffee this morning and sorely miss Paradox engine in most pods outside my own playgroup. Still, the rest of the comment stands, this can easily be a scepter deck given the low threshold of mana you need to produce and the ease it can fit in as an alternate wincon that doesn't require you to change your game plan. The extra turn path is still highly suggested, while it is a little more expense monetarily the pay off is great and the extra turns can be played as value pieces on their own as well, and it gives you a back up package on your scepter game plan. Counterspell on scepter is still a very good thing to do. Hightide on scepter is also a dumby thicc play I highly recommend in certain situations if you have a lot of things you want to play. You can also put merchant scroll on it to constantly be tutoring, possibilities really are endless with scepter.

Once again sorry for my slip, still an awesome deck!

Crazymadhatter, thank you for the in-depth feedback. I have researched many Talrand win conditions and am also familiar with Dramatic/Scepter and also know it to be a popular Talrand win-con. The history of this deck includes many, various conditions, but the final version includes only one: Thoracle. Dramatic/Scepter would be a welcome addition because it requires no creatures however there are a few considerable issues with its inclusion: 1) cost—-this is a $75 build in which most cards cost well less than .25 cents, There’s little room for an $8 card—-what would you remove? 2) tutors—-what can tutor for Scepter that is realistically included in a budget deck? I really do like the idea. It’s just difficult to make the cut for a combo that is difficult to tutor. What are your thoughts?
