Commander Legends Update —Nov. 19, 2020

Commander Legends added a bunch of cool cards, a few of which caught my eye. I knew a few needed to be implemented, and so I did. Here's the cards that caught my attention and why, first:

War Room seemed like a cool land to generate card draw if I need it. Since I'm only running one color, it only costs 1 life and 3 mana.

Jeska's Will is an amazing card. It give the choice of giving lots of mana all at once, or the choice of getting a few cards to play with... except, with my commander in play, I can do both. This card can also combo with underworld breach if I have a nice-sized graveyard. Very powerful!

Soulfire Eruption is the big red mythical sorcery. With a full board, I can set up my next turn to help me win. In fact, playing this card once ahead of curve on turn 6 literally won me the game on the following turn. (Though having other cards aided me in the win, like Runaway Steam-Kin)

Court of Ire brings the monarchy into the game, and generate huge damage if my opponents don't take it from me. Unfortunately, I have few creatures in play, so it's easily taken... oh well... I will try out the card and see how it feels, but it may leave the deck in the future if I find something better. Out of these 4 cards, this is the least likely to stay long-term.

So, here's how I updated the deck:

  1. Removed Oath of Chandra. Added Court of Ire
  2. Removed 1 Mountain. Added War Room
  3. Removed Magma Jet. Added Jeska's Will
  4. Removed Twist Allegiance. Added Soulfire Eruption

Guttersnipe turns all your burn spells a bit more deadly dealing damage to every opponent for a total of 6 more damage per instant or sorcery. Then Chain Reaction is a four mana board wipe which can almost exclusively be found in white. You're not playing very creature heavy so it shouldn't effect your board much and it fits the Chandra vibe almost perfectly. Then there's Mana Geyser which adds more ramp, can help you catch up to your opponents if you're behind, and can make an explosive turn in the late game that can lead to you at least killing one person out right. And the best part is all of these cards can be bought for less than 1$. Now it seems like the biggest issue with this deck is running out of cards and losing steam. Making the deck Izzet (Red/Blue) would probably make it more competitive and fix alot of the issues you're running into but it wouldn't really fit the theme.

The Chain Veil is not just for Liliana! You could make great use of it here.

Gamble is a pretty decent tutor. Most of the time.

Crawlspace seems pretty important for saving you and your Chandras from being overwhelmed. There's also Smoke that can be pretty effective.

Why play Twist Allegiance when you could play Insurrection for just 1 more mana and win the game?

Braid of Fire doesn't do very much for you. The mana disappears after your Upkeep phase, so you can only use it for instants and activated abilities. You have a few uses, but overall it seems pretty limited.

You could use a lot more board wipes. Earthquake, Breath of Darigaaz, Fault Line, Rolling Earthquake, Starstorm, Subterranean Tremors, Blasphemous Act... Take your pick! These also play well with damage doublers and Repercussion. I would take out some of your targeted removal for it. Even Lightning Bolt doesn't stack well in multiplayer.

There's definitely better card draw out there than Wild Guess. If you don't want to shill out for Wheel of Fortune, there are fine subsitutes out there. There's also Outpost Siege, Bedlam Reveler or if you want to stay cheap, there's also Light Up the Stage.

Thanks for the great suggestions, Spell_Slam. I've definitely added several to my maybeboard, and will eventually add a couple of them to the deck. I already had a Blasphemous Act, but adding at least one of the X cost instant-speed board wipes will be super helpful. Smoke would be a great protection to slow down other players attacking me, and Crawlspace would definitely slow down people attacking me. The Chain Veil is the biggest one for me, though. I just haven't had the opportunity to pick one up for this deck. Again, thanks for the suggestions, they're super helpful!

Chandra's Incinerator is a must-have for a Chandra deck! It fits with the theme and everything! If you'd like to go a little crazy with your burn spells, maybe add Double Vision. I know this is kind of a staple (and sort of pricy), but why not Dockside Extortionist, it gives some ramp in red. (A budget-ish version that works well with burn is Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge.

On-theme with Chandra are any of the Jaya planeswalkers, given that Jaya was her mentor, idk. (Jaya Ballard, Jaya, Venerated Firemage)

Wheel of Misfortune is also a good card from the new set, I'd pick it up before the price raises too much.

Valakut Awakening  Flip is good as well (and it's a land))
