Sideboard

Maybeboard

Here's my take on big ol artifacts in Aus 7pt highlander.

Points in Academy, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Tinker

  • Ratchet Bomb to board replacing Sphinx of Steel Wind

  • Cut Mountain, Chandra TOD and Blightsteel Colossus, Sundering Titan

  • Add in Gifts, Painter's Servant, Tribute Mage, Staff of Nin, Grindstone

  • Swap Hydroblast for Red Elemental Blast in Board

NOTES:

I wanted to try running a painters combo in the deck as a way of closing out games that I lock out behind stax pieces, and because I'm a sucker for it. There's still a bit of a nonbo with chalice in the main with these and considering swapping that to the board next. I don't think this is a good change overall but I'm wanting to try it.

With these changes, Chandra TOD was first to go with her exile ability. Given I run very little burn her use wasn't too far beyond bolting a creature and dealing 2-6 damage at the risk of exiling my payoffs. With so much control and white in my meta, blightsteel was next to go given he always got bloody exiled even on T1 tinkers. Sundy T out because he just didn't feel impactful the turns he hit unless opp was already mana screwed. Additionally in a low budget meta he normally took out only 1 or two opp lands and multiple of mine. The ping is nice against aggro from Staff and extra draw is welcome.

Finally with so much control around, a second counter in the form of REB is worth testing. Especially with a hint more combo focus now. Next possible changes is a wrath in sideboard for aggro in the form of anger of the gods or fiery confluence.

If I do need to rely on big bois, I've still got pumped up XX's like ballista and hangarback, in addition to weld/tinker targets in the form of wurmcoil and combustible. Might feel a bit low density though. It's also a consideration to cut lotus petal instead of a bomb.

  • Down Ratchet Bomb in sideboard for Fiery Confluence

  • Down Saheeli, Sublime Artificer and Staff of Nin for Island and Inferno Titan

NOTES:

For the most part, Fiery confluence acts as a board wipe just as well as Ratchet Bomb. I want to trial running it as it can wipe a larger range of aggro decks at once or null rods the turn you fire it off. This means it demands a counter as opposed to sitting around for 3 turns to eat removal to pop a TNN. The burn is also nice.

I felt starved for blue sources sometimes when a moon effect hits the field so the extra Island is nice. Saheeli was cool and all but aside from copying artifacts if she stuck which I already have a few effects that do that, I would much rather the mana consistency. Her chump blockers weren't always that relevant and her colours were demanding to land early.

The swap for Inferno Titan is a trial too for now. Staff's relevance as an artifact isn't normally too important as it is never in the top tinker targets or wants for weld a lot. The draw is nice and it provided an ability to win through your own ensnaring bridges. Inferno T is a nice try as he can wipe better when he hits and attacks vs the pings, and demands an answer a lot more. Will see how it goes.

Painters combo sucks lmao

  • Out Painter's Servant, Grindstone and Tribute Mage

  • In Staff of Nin, Chandra TOD, Saheeli, Sublime Artificer.

NOTES:

Painter's servant combo was nice when it happened and wasn't interacted with (rare), but 90% of the time I just wish I had a bomb to slam down on the table.

  • Out Inferno Titan, Gifts Ungiven, Tezzeret Artifice Master, Staff of Nin, Fiery Confluence

  • In Myr Battlesphere, Lodestone Golem, Ugin, The Ineffable, Coercive Portal, Ratchet Bomb

Notes: It felt really bad having artifact synergies and not having artifact bombs to abuse them with. Also gifts normally was just strictly bad and didn't lead to a quick win. I'm wondering whether to put some of the sideboard interaction in the main instead. Also Newgin is just strictly better than Tez in this deck and I'd like to try a much much cheaper CMC staff of nin.

  • Padeem from SB to maindeck, cutting Coercive Portal

  • Mountain and Island in for Mox Diamond and Minamo

  • Sculpting Steel and Trinket Mage out for Goblin Engineer and TKS to main

  • Spyglass and Pithing Needle to SB

  • Swapped Ratchet Bomb for EE

NOTES: Padeem accomplishes the same thing as portal in addition to the hexproof most of the time, his 4 toughness also keeps a decent portion of burn based removal off him. Mox diamond helped the explosive starts sometimes but overall felt bad to draw later game and I would much rather a basic in my blood moon deck. Sculpting steel felt bad compared to metamorph, with less versatility and a win-more sometimes bad feel. Engineer also seems to be an important hate piece tutor. Trinket mage didn't feel too impactful either most of the time and I'd just rather something good. TKS was boarded in loads and is overall just good, so to main he goes. With the space the spyglass and needle were thrown in to help a variety of matchups from lands, walkers and burn, in addition to being tutorable easily. EE is strictly better than ratchet bomb.

  • Cut Tolaria West, Magus of the Moon, Saheeli, REB, Chalice, Phyrexian Metamorph, Chaos Warp and Chandra TOD

  • Added Urza, Hydroblast, Trinket Mage, Sai, Sundering Titan, Everflowing Chalice, Chandra AI, Fiery Confluence

  • Moved Inkwell Leviathan to SB

  • Engineered Explosives to Main

NOTES:

I literally never felt like using tolaria west to transmute, both due to colour requirements and how slow it was. It kept getting a cut in game 2's so I thought trinket mage would be a better replacement, as it provides almost the same role + a body to block.

Double REB effect in SB without a hydroblast felt rough in all the non-control matchups (which was most of them) and I've learned to hedge less on control match ups. This is also the reason inkwell was moved to the board. Chalice for a similar reason felt way to narrow in such a diverse cmc format. Who knows, maybe it'll go back in, but I want to test without.

Sai is a whole heap easier to cast than saheeli and better on an empty board to develop more. I want to try him again over saheeli as she is rarely relevant I found too. Flying also helps a load.

Sundering Titan really needs a home, and I think he is good enough to stick. Urza is also something I've wanted to try for a while. The shuffle isn't irrelevant but the beater and null rod circumvention seems nice. Last but not least, redundant moon effects are meh, especially on such an easy to remove body. I may want another but I want to test something else in that slot.

EE instead of Chandra seems alright, I do like a game 1 wrath and TOD isn't always good, moreso for control. I dislike the copy effects and metamorph always seems sub-par. More consistency to 2 mana ramp is wanted too for the everflowing chalice.
