Won 3rd FNM! —March 23, 2014

I was able to win my 3rd FNM with this deck!

Going into the FNM I knew I would probably see a ton of Birthing Pod decks. So I changed out my sideboard immediately with Naturalize and Beast WIthin and I took out Purphoros and birds of paradise.

First deck I faced was a storm deck that never fired properly. The entire time he spent pegging my walkers with red damage spells and slowing me down in game one. Game two I started in hand with a grafdiggers cage and he had no removal for it. 2-0

Second deck I faced was a birthing pod varient. It worked really well against me for the first round as I didnt pick up any of my removals for the entire first match, but for game 2 and 3 I was mostly unbothered after removing his pods once or twice per game. 2-1

Third deck I faced was a speedy red deck with some damage spells, I won the first game by using garruks and xenagos's token creating ability to stall long enough for garruk to ultimate. Game two I lost in a blaze of glory on turn 3 as I dead drew and he had exactly 20 damage by turn 3. The last game I was able to stall again with xenaogos token chump blocker and then I drew into a doubling seasons and had a sarkon vol in hand. I was able to play both on the same turn with xenagos +1 and he conceded when I had 10 4/4 dragons out. 2-1

The final game I played was against a birthing pod, tarm, and thoughtsize deck. On game 1 he started with a thoughtsize and took my xenagos out (if he had taken my arbor elf i would have lost the game). I drew into another xenagos and he had a few kill spells for my mycoloth that came out; I thought I lost the game but I was able to do slight enough damage and keep his pod off the board. Game 2 his pod fired off as well as he removed my arbor elf this time. With no ramp in my hand i thought I was toast but he made a few careless mistakes and grabbed an an artifact creature with pod which I toasted with my narturalize. Tarmogoyf continued to poke me for a good part of the match, but I drew a sarkon vol and did a -2, then attacked with it, and played mycoloth and sacked his creature to my devour. That was enough to win the match after that. 2-1

Do I really want to give my opponents free damage when I don't havea way to gain life? I Really like the idea though...

With Doubling Season and your planeswalkers alone, that won't be an issue. They'll get 2-3 damage on you from it and you'll get like 10 or 12. Heck, Doubling Season + Pandemonium + Sarkhan Vol alone is an instant kill, as opposed to just 10 damage with Purphoros.

Anyway, it was used against me recently in a similar fashion, and it was pretty epic.

They can use the redirect rule to hit my walkers with their creatures.from that card. ..? That would be distasterous.

Tested this deck and it gets huge fast! +1 for that! But, there is one card always in the back of my mind when I think tokens and that's Ratchet Bomb . How do you plan to counter that if/when it starts showing up in your meta's sideboards?

I have artifact and permanent removal on my sideboard for that very reason!

Ok, now I see the Pithing Needle , but that's the only thing in your sideboard that will stop Ratchet Bomb cold. Maybe add another one to the Side? Try and hit Ratchet Bomb with a removal spell and the other guy will just laugh and pop the Bomb over your Naturalize / Beast Within .

Yeah that is a hard card to get around for this deck. fortunately Ratchet Bomb is a one off per card and I usually dont have issues recovering because my creatures that create the tokens are rather large (or planeswalkers), so how i generate the tokens will still remain in play and I should be able to come back from there...but that card is a problem for this deck.

Ratchet Bomb isn't that big of a deal against this due to the fact generally the main token generators Mycoloth + Dragon Broodmother will survive.
