*BUDGET* Mutation: it is the key to our evolution.

Commander / EDH Budget Counters Mutate Theme/Gimmick Value Engine

Eareph

This is the new budget version (the former "budget" version still costed 600-900 dollars...) It will most likely play slower since there aren't many duel lands and only a couple basic fetches, but once it gets going that shouldn't matter too much. If you can get Migratory Greathorn up and mutating then your land problem shouldn't be much of an issue, though once you get to that point Ramos, Dragon Engine is going to be your mana generator anyway.

Here is the link for the silly expensive version (honestly, I'd just purchase proxies if I wanted this version): Mutation: it is the key to our evolution.

So, I finally learned how Mutate works. It. Is. Awesome. It's so awesome that I shoved every card that had that keyword (minus 2 or 3 that weren't worth the CMC) into a single super deck. This is pretty straight forward, I think... I have Ramos, Dragon Engine as the commander, not only for its 5 color identity (though mostly that), but also for its amazing ability to generate mana and turn itself into a beater. Combine that with mutate... Yup, it's gonna get wacky.

One of the most important cards is Muldrotha, the Gravetide, which is one of the reasons I included so many tutors. We need to get that card on the field so we can get some value out of mutate from the grave. Another key card is Animar, Soul of Elements as this will significanly reduce our creature cost, making the commander free and dropping the mutate to only colored cost. I tossed Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief in once I learned that mutate will trigger her ability, therefore doubling the value of nearly all our monsters. There're other fun interactions like constantly casting our 3 CMC or less cards (tutors) for free via Vadrok, Apex of Thunder or recurring our instant/sorcery spells with Lore Drakkis and then just adding more mutate to our hands.

There's a lot of things we can do and it's a really fun deck.

Oh, by the way, I feel like I should mention that when you mutate over Ramos, Dragon Engine it's considered a new card for the purposes of the mana ability. So, if you have enough counters and can continuously generate said counters, you can develop a pseudo-infinite mana situation. This works especially well once you have one of your 3 or less CMC tutors in the grave and have mutated with Vadrok, Apex of Thunder. You can get a free cast of the tutor, get some counters, activate the mana ability, then mutate with whatever you search, get more counters, get another free search + counters, get more mana, etc. Once you've reached critical mana mass the game is over. Just mutate to victory!
