Budget cEDH Gitrog Guide

MTGGoldfish link

If this is your introduction to cEDH, then welcome! This decklist and accompanying guide aim to provide you with both a solid base to start from - that competes well against high powered decks as well as other budget cEDH lists - as well as offering a direct path of upgrades to a 100% full power list from one of the most infamous and premier decks of cEDH. If you want a more complete delve into the cards, interactions, and matchups the deck has to offer after this then I suggest reading either the main primer or the more meta-specific Resilient Frog primer. If you seek even further Gitrog content, then I suggest joining our Discord server and reading my Gitrog Monster cEDH Library document!

For those of you who have seen the previous version of this decklist, at $200, I'm afraid I had to increase the budget for this build. Magic, and especially EDH, has become far more expensive since I initially made budget decklists for cEDH Gitrog. The previous list was already over $240 by the time I started working on this new one and I found it nearly impossible to bring it down again while preserving the integrity of the decklist. So instead I just refined it and here we are - I hope this decklist and guide serves you well!

Good luck and happy frogging!

Underrealm Lich: An extremely powerful creature in a slower list - which this naturally is by its budget nature. The documentation has some ways to use him.

Slaughter Pact: A strong removal spell that synergizes with Mausoleum Secrets in a pinch.

Ebony Charm: An advantage of Gaea's Blessing builds is that they can abuse this card in several ways - one of which is its use in the 20 Easy Steps. There is a budget version of these steps that this decklist can utilize in the "Budget Easy Steps" section below.

Mausoleum Secrets: A versatile instant speed tutor that can find both an outlet (X=1 gets Putrid Imp and X=2 gets Oblivion Crown) and Dakmor Salvage to combo off (X=1 gets Entomb). Even if there are no creatures in the yard, you can still get Slaughter Pact in a pinch as noted above.

Eldritch Evolution: This is a tutor for a discard outlet, mostly. Sometimes you may be inclined to take something like Reclamation Sage or Caustic Caterpillar in case there is a Rest in Peace or something similar on the board. It can also grab Underrealm Lich or Golgari Grave-Troll (GGT can be at 1 counter if the sacrificed creature is the only one in your yard, allowing you to kill GGT by paying 1 mana to remove said counter) in some exceptional cases.

Jarad's Orders: A two-for-one tutor that grabs both a discard outlet such as Putrid Imp and a Golgari Grave-Troll to the graveyard to search for Dakmor Salvage. High likelihood to win you the game if Gitrog is out and you have lands to spare.

Shared Summons: Same exact use as Jarad's Orders above - except that one mana more, both are to hand, and its instant speed.

Final Parting: Same as the last two two-for-one tutors, except this can grab Dakmor Salvage to the graveyard directly.

Wishclaw Talisman: Its either this or Diabolic Tutor at a whopping 4 mana, take your pick. Make sure you use this on someone's end step at the least unless you're winning that turn.

Lands

Swamp > Bloodstained Mire
Forest > Windswept Heath
Terramorphic Expanse > Wooded Foothills
Grand Coliseum > Polluted Delta
The fetchlands are one of the largest draws to Gitrog as a competitive commander - This change along will empower the deck by a massive degree.

Hissing Quagmire > Overgrown Tomb
This is a necessary addition with all the added fetchlands.

Hickory Woodlot > Ancient Tomb
A much better mana acceleration option.

Tutors

Shared Summons > Finale of Devastation
Finale is effectively cheaper and offers not only a back-up plan to win (X=10+), but can be directly used in the main combo should other pieces get exiled.

Wishclaw Talisman > Demonic Tutor
Wishclaw is a liability and Demonic is just cheaper.

Nylea's Intervention > Worldly Tutor
Worldy is significantly cheaper and an instant - and we don't need two Sylvan Scryings.

The Rest

Golgari Signet > Mana Vault
Mana Vault plays an important role in powering out turn 2 Gitrogs consistently.

Grisly Salvage > Sylvan Library
Edge of Autumn > Veil of Summer
Reclamation Sage > Abrupt Decay
These cards don't need much explanation - the new ones are just more powerful by orders of magnitude.

These changes should bring you in line with This List at $500.
