This is a series I've devised to take a break from my "AustinoCorino's Quest to Best Them All!" series. In these decks I will be operating under a $30 dollar budget based on TCGPlayer pricing (not including the commander) and will be talking about several questionable picks I may have made and other great cards I may not have included.

The first commander we're looking at is Mayael the Anima, who is a commander that can come down very early and has an activated ability to cheat out big, dumb creatures turn after turn. Let's take a look into some picks you may not have made...

Questionable Picks

Valleymaker is a 5/5 for 6, which means our commander can grab it off of the top, but it's not a very combat-centric creature. Instead, the ability to trade in some of our forests for an extra three mana or our mountains to finish off a creature (or an opponent) makes it a very easy choice for me.

Honored Hierarch is a mana dork... sort of. If you have this guy out turn 1 it's very easy to have him become renowned turn 2 and start producing whatever color of mana we need, and fixing is a must have for a 3 color deck that's looking to cast its commander as early as possible.

Archon of Valor's Reach is a 5/6 with flying for 6, which is very playable by itself, but it's ability to shut off a certain card type is amazing. That eggs deck got you down? Name artifacts! Superfriends not being so friendly? Name planeswalkers! Storm deck taking 20 minute turns? Name sorcery! This card is very flexible and at the very least can swing in for damage relatively easily.

Other Options

Bloodthorn Taunter is a 2 drop with haste that gives our big stompers haste as well. Being able to be cast before Mayael has a chance to activate is great compared to other options that might come down in later turns, as it gives us less activations of Mayael.

Krosan Drover is a 4 drop that reduces most of our large fellas by 2 generic mana. That's great if our Mayael keeps getting hated off of the table, but for a mana reducer that wants to come down on curve it has 0 protection and can very easily die in combat.
