Overhaul time! —April 18, 2021
I haven't really looked at my rat deck (except for a couple of change-outs) with serious eyes and this was my first ever built deck, so now it's time to look at it with different eyes. O__O
Murder -> Oubliette. I'd rather focus on keeping stuff from coming back easily as well as making commanders lose their abilities. Same mana cost, better removal IMO.
Bolas's Citadel -> Phyrexian Arena. The Citadel is a banger of card but my deck isn't really built around truly utilizing it. Arena is cheaper to cast and is a staple for card draw.
Pestilence Rats -> Oversold Cemetery. Pestilence is just a lesser Relentless for the same mana cost. I was going to originally just slot in another Relentless, but Cemetery allows me to get more aggressive with my rats and constantly have a supply of Relentless going even if I'm not drawing into them
Obelisk of Urd -> Whip of Erebos. I wasn't getting enough creatures out to really make the casting of Urd worth while and it would still be pretty expensive for just a +2/+2. The lifelink is much more useful.
Leyline of the Void -> Screams from Within. I'm trading out jank fun for jank fun. Leyline is really useful when I get it in my opening hand but otherwise it's just an expensive target. Screams lets me deal with the elfball level kinds of bullshit my opponents drop.
Okiba-Gang Shinobi -> Mutilate. Okiba is just too expensive to get out and wasn't doing a whole lot for me. A cheaper boardwipe is more useful.
Burglar Rat -> Crypt Ghast. The rat is a nice early drop but otherwise have been kind of meh? Ghast is fantastic for obvious reasons.
Go for the Throat -> Skullclamp. MOAR. CARD. DRAW.
Vanquisher's Banner -> Dragon Throne of Tarkir. Yes, I know, I'm dropping the card draw after hyping it. But Vanquisher's is expensive to get out and while Dragon Throne isn't that much better, it's ability will supremely pump the rats.
Dark Ritual -> Liliana of the Dark Realms. The ramp and potential emblem with Liliana is way more useful than a one-time instance of some mana.
Foul-Tongue Shriek -> Eldrazi Monument. A one time use of life loss/gain can be good if you're swinging really wide but you know what's even better? FLYING. INDESTRUCTIBLE. RATS.
