Testing cheaper draw options —Jan. 7, 2017

I'm currently testing Deep Analysis, Night's Whisper and Tainted Pact in place of Memory Jar, Dark Petition, and Intuition. So far I like the extra draw provided by dumping deep analysis into the yard and having a night's whisper to play out turn 1 or 2. Deep analysis is a little troubling because casting it for full price seems like something I'd never want to do, but it's pretty great to just discard it to something like Frantic Search. Tainted Pact is also looking pretty good, but it feels like I should be running an additional tutor... going to have to get a cheap(er) judge foil Imperial Seal soon.

Have you considered Piranha Marsh? It probably wouldn't work in here due to the obvious downsides of entering tapped and producing only black mana, but it could help with the Animate Dragon win by enabling you to combo off without acquiring all four colors.

Primusfan42: I see your point there. It's kind of elegant, but also I don't think it does enough for the deck to use a slot.

I think Piranha Marsh is worse than a fetch land, which does the same thing (help win with Dragon combo, if your other lands are not yet providing all 4 colors). But it's more like a spell than a land, anyway. Which makes it comparable to Bazaar of Baghdad, since the bazaar also is there primarily to help the dragon combo. Except bazaar is basically Careful Study on a land; so instead of including careful study as a discard outlet I went for the bazaar here; since it's reusable and helps during the dragon combo. Careful Study is a card that almost made the cut in the deck anyway; casting it every turn is probably better than casting it once; but in practice Bazaar is not one of the best cards in the deck. I usually only get a few activations off it before the card disadvantage is too great, although it's great after any kind of wheel effect. (Bazaar makes me want to add additional card advantage, like maybe Deep Analysis.)

Also, it turns out that colors are not usually a problem in this deck; the mana base works excellently.

Anyway, if it were better than Bazaar of Baghdad, I'd run it. But bazaar has a lot of uses outside of just enabling leaner dragon combos; whereas piranha marsh seems to have a lot less.

OH MAN, note that with Laboratory Maniac in the deck, you can do the dragon combo with nothing but bazaar. Let's say you went turn 1: play Bazaar of Baghdad, Lotus Petal, Dark Ritual, Entomb -> Worldgorger Dragon, Animate Dead the dragon. You then tap bazaar until you're down to 0 or 1 card in your library, then choose to move the animate dead onto the laboratory maniac, then tap bazaar for the win.

mmcgeach: I'm glad to see you going more in depth with your descriptions; it's definitely going to be a nice read when it is done. If you're looking to clean it up a bit, you can use this code and modify it to your liking:

Primer Code Show

It'll end up looking like my Breya list:

You've already seen my list, as we were having a discussion over on reddit.

Aha, thanks. I was trying to use the tappedout.net formatting help page, and that seems to contain a lot of typos, so that was pretty useless.

I like the accordion action. It'll help as I try to bring some of the discussions from the cEDH reddit here, for easy reference. :)
