Borborygmos Enraged - Borb's MAD Utility Lands

Commander / EDH* RG (Gruul)

This is my unique spin on the Borborygmos Enraged EDH deck. which is designed to attract as little negative attention to itself as possible until you've amassed a large enough hand of lands. As a result, it's much more defensive and less creature focused than your average Gruul deck. A lot of utility in the deck is also deliberately kept in the lands, to ensure that one of EDH's many board-wipes don't set it back as far.

I have made and used this deck many times in real-life games, and can vouch that, although it's definitely not a tier 1 deck, you can still have a lot of fun with it while also not being a total pushover.

HOW IT PLAYS As mentioned before, this deck wants to ramp to about 8-10 mana as soon as possible, while keeping as many lands in hand as possible. Once Borborygmos Enraged is on the field, it's likely that most players will consider you the biggest threat at the table. If you've got a lot of cards in hand, threaten MAD (mutually assured destruction) to anyone who looks at you funny. Most people wouldn't want to have 6+ lands thrown at their face for using a kill-spell.

HOW IT RAMPS I avoided using Rampant Growth type effects deliberately, as a land on the field is useless once Borborygmos is in play. Instead, I've included effects such as Burgeoning and Sakura-Tribe Scout to allow lands to be cheated onto the field from hand. Due to the large amount of land tutoring effects in the deck, this usually allows me to put at least two lands into play per-turn, and, late-game they can be used with the several bounce-lands ( Gruul Turf , Guildless Commons , Vesuva ) to trigger landfall triggers if needed.

HOW IT DEFENDS ITSELF This deck is made up mostly of utility creatures, and isn't designed to handle aggression like the average Gruul deck. Several "One-man army" creatures ( Scute Swarm , Dragonlair Spider , Avenger of Zendikar , etc.) serve as the main defense, and are usually enough to deter attackers without looking threatening to the other players. If all else fails, there's a few board-wipes for good measure.

THE DARK DEPTHS COMBO BLUFF The Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage combo is in this deck. While a good combo, its main purpose is to ensure you get the desired lands from Realms Uncharted . As long as you include those two cards in the search, almost all opponents will opt to give you anything but the combo, so use that to ensure you get the lands you desire.

OTHER NOTES Blood Moon is pretty annoying, but thankfully rare. Mass land destruction also shuts this deck down pretty hard, but at least if it happens, you won't be the primary target for a while.
