You can get a lot of punch out of a one- or two-mana creature, assuming you don't expect to keep it for long. Thankfully, dirt-cheap reanimation spells like Unearth, Claim / Fame and Call of the Death-Dweller let you keep trying until you win, and hurting your opponent more each time.

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger can be played for two mana as a discard spell with some potential damage thrown in. From there, though, you can keep reanimating it for more discard triggers. Eventually enough cheap spells will have piled up in your graveyard that he can escape, this time playing for keeps and ready to finish your cardless foe off. Vexing Devil likewise nails your opponent for four or sticks around as an undercosted threat, Archfiend's Vessel is only one mana yet can be reanimated as a 5/5 flyer, and Lightning Skelemental can hit for major damage and two discards time and time again.
