So my brother, very kindly, bought me an Urza for my birthday yesterday.

I’ve been thinking about what to do with it, should I just put it into one of my decks or should I build a commander deck?

I have also, recently, got engaged and have a wedding to pay for, so I can’t go splashing the cash on a fully tuned Urza deck. I would like it to be very thematic and pretty, what with Urza being the grand daddy of magic lore.

Urza

So, obviously a lot of people have built Urza decks. I wanted to try and build something that could hold its own at a good table but I didn’t want to go down the control route of Winter Orb and other cards like that.

I finally decided on building a list that could operate in the same way with or without Urza on the board.

Artifacts

The more artifacts we can get the better. We’re running 16 artifacts that cost or less, which can ramp us out quickly but I’ve also tried to use useful artifacts that am target graveyards, mill people for one or draw us a card or two.

To keep the budget low we’re also running several creatures that create an artifact when they enter, if Urza is out this essentially a cost reducer.

All ramp us very quickly and tigger other ETB effects that we’re running.

Infinite mana

We’re running a few infinite mana combos.

Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter

Grand Architect + Pili-Pala

Memnite + Sol Ring + Tidespout Tyrant or any 0 mana artifact creates infinite or colourless.

Using infinite mana we can cast the deck and then win with Laboratory Maniac or cast Aetherflux Reservoir and then another spell, gain a ton of life and laser beam everyone to death. The other option would be to use Blue Sun's Zenith and make everyone draw their decks and then die lose to not being able to draw.

Urza without Urza

If Urza gets removed to often and becomes too difficult to cast then we can pull of the same win conditions using Future Sight + Omniscience

Both of these can be fetched with Planar Bridge or we could get lucky and cast them with Urza.
