Description

I chose to brew a deck combining these two Dimir legends because they play well with graveyard and ETB. Gyruda is the deck's main mill outlet. The goal is to blink or copy Gyruda and get as much value out of his ETB as possible. Most of the synergy in the deck revolves around gyruda and ETB effects. You could swap Tormod and Sakashima out with another commander like Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, Vela the Night-Clad, or Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths.

This deck is packed full of effects that exile and return or clone creatures. This is because triggering enter the battlefield abilities is the core strategy of the deck. Even without Sakashima, the legendary rule destroying any extra Gyrudas that the copy effects make isn't an issue. Triggering his ETB effect an additional time is well worth the resources.

The creatures in the section also allow you to dig deeper when you hit them with Gyruda's ability. This lets you filter through and try to find a huge creature to hit

This section includes the huge creatures that the deck allows you to dump into play for free. The creatures that made the cut for this category are usually large and either have a powerful ETB effect and/or graveyard interaction. There are plenty of good targets in other categories as well.

The mana rocks and lands of the deck are pretty self explanatory. Everything is pretty much par for the course than some odd choices made due to the lack of odd cards.

One notable land is Port of Karfell. I'm a big fan of this cycle of lands, and this one works great to pull Gyruda out of the graveyard.

Because Gyruda isn't the commander of the deck it is a must to be able to bring him back if he's destroyed. Thats where this section comes in. Another thing in it is instant/sorcery recursion. Being able to hit an Archaeomancer or Torrential Gearhulk off of Gyruda gives you the option to grab a flicker effect out of the graveyard and keep the chain going.

Most of the removal I decided to include in the deck is creature based. This is so you can cheat them in with Gyruda and re-use their effects with a flicker. I bundled the counterspells in with this group as well because spell removal is still removal.

Every deck needs a couple board wipes, and this one actually has some good options. card:Massacre Worm is an absolute house, and on top of wiping the board can just win you the game. Extinction Event is a really cool card and an auto-include in this strategy. Despite this, it has never preformed very well as the creatures you want to get rid of always vary in cmc.

The card draw included in the deck is mostly creature based to make it even more likely to hit something off of Gyruda's ability. Riverwise Augur is a Brainstorm on a body that works really well with the strategy of the deck. Use his ability before Gyruda's to guarantee you're going to hit the card you want when you flip the top four.
