Sprite Dragon and Manamorphose —Aug. 5, 2020

Thanks all for the suggestions! Kiln Fiend didn't make it in, because it was a bit too all or nothing for my taste. - Sprite Dragon has been absolutely fantastic. Took out 2 Stormchaser Mage and 2 Ghitu Lavarunner to make place for a full playset. - I was able to pick up a playset of Manamorphose for 14 euros thanks to the release of Double Masters. - I took out 1 Beamsplitter Mage because while they're not terrible in multiples, its not really a place where you want to find yourself frequently - I took out the remaining 2 Wizard's Lightning. Mostly to make room for Manamorphose, but also because a 5th and 6th bolt doesnt really synergy with the pumping creatures theme (and of course because we're now lacking in wizards, it's often not even a 5th or 6th bolt at all) - I also added 2 Apostle's Blessing main and removed one Vapor Snag because I feel the protection is worth more than removing the opponent's threat in this deck

I'm indeed running assault strobe, do you think I need a fourth?

Manamorphose is out of my budget unfortunately.

NoopyNolife you're good, didn't see it the first look. Might wanna cut a few creatures and add more pump like Titan's Strength the scry is big and helps filter for the kill. Kiln Fiend is absolutely bonkers too.

rjphilla I agree, Titan's Strength works wonders in the deck. I've been thinking about adding a couple of Samut's Sprint too, but I think the deck might start to lack in interaction if there's too many buff spells (so most spells will be dead if there's no creatures on the board), especially if I take creatures out.

Kiln Fiend is completely broken, I'm just annoyed at its low toughness and lack of haste. It's arguably better than Stormchaser Mage but at least that's coming in for 1 damage before it gets removed and is easier to protect from bolts.

Any thoughts? I might just be grossly underestimating Kiln Fiend.

I actually play a playset of both!

NoopyNolife Kiln Fiend is redonkulous! You can throw in a few Apostle's Blessing for protection

rjphilla I've been tinkering with Apostle's Blessing and I do think it's a more powerful and versatile replacement for Vapor Snag.

I'll give Kiln Fiend a shot, altough I have a hard time making space. I don't want to lose one drops (even though the 1/2 wizards are objectively bad) because I feel the deck needs them to gain tempo.

I'll try 2 fiends, 3 chasers and 3 splitters and I'll update from there!

Nice. If you ever get the $40 just get yourself a playset of Manamorphose it takes the deck to the next level. You get prowess triggers,Mana fixing and draw a card it's great.

Inspired by your deck and looking for a new deck myself. I played and modified your deck concept into the following deck list "Beamsplitter decklist". Had some mana issues when first testing the deck, hence the additional lands and sadly also the main contributers to the higher deck price.

You.can get 4x Lp manamorphose off of eBay for $22, if that helps.

Kiln Fiend is definitely worth it in this type of deck. It's +3/0 quick pump ability allows for instance/sorc that give evasion, trample and the like, while still getting the benefits of pump spells.

I have an outdated deck, Steamblast that is based off of this storm/prowess strategy. These decks are always a bit of a glass Cannon, but are fun and super effective if you can get the right cards.

If you like a storm strategy, check out Pyrolectric Firing Squad. Simply one of my faves to play, and is a bit more consistent and competitive than the R/U storm.

+1, but I insist upon Kiln Fiend as an addition.

Thanks for thinking with me TheSurgeon! I'll definitely try out Kiln Fiend, but because of the pandemic right now I'm unable to do proper testing, so it'll be mostly me 1v1'ing myself just to get a feel for the card.

Your Steamblast looks like a blast to play; I was wondering how Fling was playing out for you? It wouldn't synergise wel with Beamsplitter Mage but I'd like to know it's strengths / weaknesses anyway, it could be a decent sideboard card.

Oh and I will keep the 'cheap' manamorphose in mind, but right now even that is out of my budget haha.

How about Sprite Dragon? It seems better than Ghitu Lavarunner or Stormchaser Mage since it gets permanent 1/1 counters and still gets haster.

Also, Manamorphose is cheaper now because it was reprinted in mystery boosters. You can even open a few mystery booster packs and get it relatively easily since manamorphose is a common.

It seems that your mana base is a little underwhelming, probably due to budget reasons. Making your mana more consistant should be your number one goal. Since fetch lands are really expensive, you can use a few Sulfur Falls, Spirebluff Canal, Fiery Islet, Steam Vents. Even if you can't get a playset of them, try to get as much as possible. A really budget dual land would be Temple of Epiphany but I wouldn't reccomend it because you are an aggro deck and dont want to be missing out on mana. However, if you cant get any untap duel lands, it is good to have a few copies of them in your deck. (note that tapped out sometimes show cards as more expensive than it normally is. also some copies of a card are cheaper)

Since this is modern, expect a few graveyard decks, so you might want to add in some graveyard interaction/hate. I would reccomend Tormod's Crypt because it is cheap in real life, costs only 0 mana and triggers prowess/sprite dragon's ability. Put 3 of them in your sideboard instead of temur battle rage and smelt. Also, you might want some creature removal in the sideboard like Dismember. Dismember is essentially one mana and can deal with pretty much any creature.

Otherwise, really cool deck! I'm surprised how good it looks with such a small budget. This could easiley be very competitive if you upgrade your mana base and change a few cards in your mainboard. However, the sideboard does need some work and there should be more replacements other than what i said.

Oh also, Vapor Snag is a good pseudo removal for sideboard and mainboard since it bounces creatures, makes your opponent lose a life, and triggers prowess - all at instant speed!

Clashboy15, thank you so much for all you suggestions, and especially your thoughts behind them. Sprite Dragon seems right up this decks alley. The fact that it is a 1/1 does hurt though, it makes it a reaally easy target for removal. I'll test them for sure though!

As for the mana base, my budget won't allow me to buy any of those lands right now, but eventually I'll try to smoothe out the lands. For now, the 4 Shivan Reefs will have to do, because I've played tap lands before and they were detrimental to the deck.

Dismember is a fantastic card, and can easily be sideboarded in for Mutagenic Growth. Definitely don't want to run both at once though, with the painful manabase and all.

My own meta doesn't have much graveyard decks, but I do think 2 copies of Tormod's Crypt in the sideboard would be nice.

Vapor Snag is great indeed, but I don't think I'll be adding more than the 2 copies that the deck already has ;).
