I am pretty excited to build a Batman Flavored Deck. Hopefully I can do the Dark Knight justice. So excited that I've been working on it since the Superman Dragon Shield Contest.

First, Batman is Kenrith, the Returned King. His creature type (Human Noble) is a nod to Bruce Wayne's "nobility" in Gotham city. Kenrith's primary color is white (because it's the only color in his casting cost), which aligns with Batman's goals- not necessarily his methods. Being a five-color commander is a reference to Batman's vast skill set (Fighting styles, languages, intelligence, detective-ness?, etc). The theme of this deck with highlight Batman's biggest or most prominent skill: Back up plans. With Kenrith, the Returned King we will have several Alternate Win Conditions represent the back up pans that Batman would have going into battle with an opponent.

Contingency Plans

In no particular Order...

Test of Endurance is NOT on the list because it was $20 when I price checked it.

Special Guests

  1. Superman
  2. Wonder Woman
  3. Batgirl and Robin(s)
    • These two will be the Kenrith Twins. The Royal Scions.
    • Any sidekicks Batman takes in because family to him, so it is fitting that Kenrith's children represent the sidekicks
  4. Ace (his dog from Batman Beyond)
    • Questing Beast because Ace is more than a dog- He's a beast! And the abilities are super helpful
  5. Catwoman / Selina Kyle
    • Mirri the Cursed is our cat burglar. She has flying to represent Catwoman's burglar abilities and how she is difficult to catch. Her +1/+1 ability it like stealing life from other creatures for herself.
  6. The Joker
    • I guess a Batman deck would not complete without The Joker- so I've picked Oko, Thief of Crowns.
    • This makes sense given all the confusion and trouble Oko caused during the Throne of Eldraine story line- and then shortly after in the Standard format. I could pick one of many jesters that have shown up during Magic's history, but I think Oko has been the most malicious to Kenrith on a personal level.
    • He is also a shapeshifter which would makes sense given The Joker's many aliases he uses/has used.
  7. Commissioner Gordon
    • Tajic, Legion's Edge, from the Boros Legion, plays our good officer's role. He is a mentor and alley.
  8. The Riddler
    • Rankle, Master of Pranks is The Riddler. There is some debate about what is a riddle, joke, or prank, so we don't know if a Prankster would be Joker or Riddler.... but I already have a pretty good Joker on the list.
  9. Mr. Freeze
    • Mr. Freeze, the dude in a metal cryo-suit with the awesome freeze-gun is our Frost Titan. I believe the tapping of an opponents permanent translates well as being frozen.
  10. Alfred Pennyworth
    • Ajani, Mentor of Heroes is a easy choices for the man who raised Batman. Ajani has brought up many heroes in Magic, and I believe he started the Gatewatch, as well.
  11. Two-Face / Harvey Dent
    • Riku of Two Reflections Seems to make sense for Two-Face, Is there two people on the card? Or just one and a reflection? Is Two-Face two people, or one?

Other Notable References

  1. Cryptic Caves is the ever-secret Bat-Cave
  2. Westvale Abbey   symbolizes the death of Bruce's parent, which eventually turn him into Batman.
  3. Lightning Greaves, Helm of Kaldra, Darksteel Plate, and Whispersilk Cloak together represent the Bat Suit- making The Batman well equipped to handle any threat.
  4. Gotham City is a City of Shadows
  5. The card Ghostly Prison with be our Arkham Asylum.
  6. Can't have Batman with a Batmobile! Mizzium Tank!
  7. Of course, if we have a Batmobile, we need a Batplane: Heart of Kiran

I think that does it for Flavorful card. All other Cards will be added to increase to chances of actually getting to complete one of the Contingency Plans. Such as Paradox Haze to add/remove more counters with more upkeeps.
