Some small but important changes and updates! —Aug. 2, 2017

Hello everyone! Brion continues to fling at 100% capacity and this deck continues to be an absolute blast to play! A few changes that I made two weeks ago and had a chance to try out:

OUT:

Stalking Vengeance-came out too late to be useful, doesn't count himself with the ability, is only a 5/5.

Sundial of the Infinite-never seemed to work the way I wanted it too. Been moved to the maybeboard, may find it's way back in!

IN:

Neheb, the Eternal-a personal favorite of mine(pre-release promo pull), not sure if he really fits but it's really nice to have a bunch of mana sometimes. He works ridiculously well with a post-combat fling with Well of Lost Dreams out.

Wild Ricochet-very fun card, great for surprising opponents. Works great for Sunforger.

Now some changes I just did today:

OUT:

Grafted Exoskeleton-seemed like a win-more card; Fumigate was nice but I found something better; Fire Diamond-same thing as with fumigate; and Bearer of the Heavens-loads of fun but didn't like how he nuked my own lands, prolonging games considerably.

IN:

Fellwar Stone-replaces Fire Diamond; as suggested, Chandra's Ignition-replaces Fumigate, good target is Brion himself; as suggested, Staff of Nin-for consistent card draw; and finally, as suggested, Gift of Immortality, to keep a creature(mostly Brion) in the game for longer.

Cards that have been doing well:

Sunforger-has been doing a lot of great work, including multiple times per game! Considering improving my instant package to make it better.

Well of Lost Dreams-I cannot gush about this card enough. I consider it a game winner, and having this and a Sol Ring in my opening hand would be optimal IMO.

Have you thought about Quicksilver Amulet it won't trigger any when cast abilities but you can cheat out really big things early for Brion fuel

Talk about throwing stones. XD in all seriousness, this is a fantastic deck. However, it doesn't seem quite as fast. Have you considered all the damage doublers like Gisela, Blade of Goldnight and Dictate of the Twin Gods? Even Gratuitous Violence and Inquisitor's Flail feel like they should be included in here since it's mainly a Boros beat-'em-up theme deck. XD

Either way, it's gotta be fantastic to play with. Hope you have fun.

xander11 welcome back, friend! Quicksilver Amulet is kinda over budget, but on my list for trading. Prioritizing Sneak Attack first.

Workman4137 Yeah it's not the fastest deck, but it works well for my(very casual) meta. Gisela is too expensive-both money and mana. Dictate hurts me too and in multiplayer pretty much kills me. Also I don't usually have the mana for the flash to be effective. The Flail is nice, but only for combat damage. I do most of my damage from Brion. Gratuitous Violence I will pick up, however.

Thanks a lot you guys!!!!

Ah, I see. However, there are ways to prevent damage to you

Glacial Chasm is a very nice way of saying, "nope" to your opponents dealing damage to you, as well as Solitary Confinement, and other fun shenanigans that prevent you from dying so quickly.

Problem is, if someone plays Humility or Overwhelming Splendor's you, ya done.

Just some food for thought. w

for some reason i always end up back here for more swanky suggestions aha this round i got Madblind Mountain for you. Albiet strange at first glance but pretty nifty when you think of the applications, say you just Terminus/Hallowed Burial it lets you shuffle your creatures back throughout your deck instead of having them all stuck on the bottom. (or if an opponent fateseals you or something which is less common) also commons with the next suggestion of Mistveil Plains which is a way for you to recur in this deck most Boros decks have some issues with the recur factor. which then you could use Madblind to shuffle it up higher then just the bottom of you deck. Since they retain basic land type they count towards landtype mattters effects as well.

They are Plains/Mountain, but they are not basic, so keep that in mind. Cards like Blood Moon will wreck them. With that said, I think they would make good additions to the deck. Thanks for spotting them, as I will likely add them to my maybeboard!

TheHamster, bushido_man96 welcome back friends!

Interesting cards... will probably pick up Madblind Mountain because it's cheap and see how it goes. I may also add more "mass tuck" effects to go along with it. Know any of those?

Blood Moon and cards like it aren't present in my meta currently... but I'll keep it in mind.

Yeah, its just something to keep in mind. Anything that searches for a basic land won't be able to search those out, either. But they still look like solid additions.

Madblind Mountain is also great. At least in my meta where some people take hour long turns, if you are just sitting there doing nothing you can always just activate it to shuffle your library to give you something to do with your hands as well hahaha forgot if it was suggested or not but Martyr's Bond would also be pretty swanky in here (a little over your $5 budget range but should be easy enough to find one to trade for) to add gravepact efffects to your flings can be pretty brutal.

I like Martyr's Bond. Its almost a white Grave Pact.

30th upvote. I've never been into EDH but I like the concept and price tag. Is it any good? Also: what about Thran Dynamo and Coldsteel Heart?

YamishiTheWickedOne Thanks for the upvote!

When you ask 'Is it any good?', do you mean EDH as a format or this deck in particular?

Thran Dynamo was over budget at $9. Coldsteel Heart is okay, might pick one up!

Thanks for the comment!

I meant the deck. I'm not expecting to work miracles with an $80 EDH but I want a cheap deck so I can focus mon competitive modern and pauper on the side. Otherwise I'd run Olivia Voldaren or Isamaru voltron. Just because I like their mechanics and they're actual decks. My budget is all going towards modern where I spend 1-2 grand per deck.

YamishiTheWickedOne I'd say it's pretty good. Packs a mean punch for the $80. I've been able to hold my own in 1v1s, 5 player games, against tribal, voltron, control and tokens. Played great games against a Sliver Overlord deck and a Zurgo Helmsmasher deck. i'd say win rate is around 60% actually. But most importantly It's a lot of fun to play IMO.

This deck seems sweet! I really like the Sundial of the Infinite use to get around having to sac creatures on your end step.

It seems like your build revolves pretty heavily around Brion so I would consider maybe adding another card or two to your protection package. Whispersilk Cloak, and Gift of Immortality are a few cheap ways to keep your commander alive and flinging. Hoarding Dragon could also help you with either tutoring out one of these effects or any other artifact you might need situationaly.

Taurean Mauler and Sunscorch Regent are both budget options that will be guaranteed threats that your opponents will have to either deal with or die to.

Card draw is obviously a hard thing to keep consistent in Boros but Avarice Amulet could be another budget option that offers consistent card draw, gives Brion a small damage increase which will also gain you more life, and gives vigilance which means you can swing with Brion for 6 with lifelink and still fling something after. The downside of, "When equipped creature dies, target opponent gains control of Avarice Amulet" will never actually matter if you equip it to Brion because since you'll be putting him back in the command zone he never actually dies

My final recommendation is Chandra's Ignition. This card is completely ridiculous with Brion Stoutarm because if you use it on him your opponents and all other creatures on the field all take 4 damage and since Brion Stoutarm is dealing the damage and he has lifelink you also gain 4 life for every player and creature hit. If you're in a 4 person commander game and there are only 6 other creatures on the field across all players you would gain 40 life!

All in all this deck is awesome and I really appreciate you checking out my primer, +1 from me!

Other things that come to mind are Spirit Loop, Assault Strobe, and Temur Battle Rage.

I'm sure you've probably had this suggested already, but if you want to make it so you can deal even more damage and gain even more life, you would be crazy not to run Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, as she doubles damage dealt to your opponents but halves the damage dealt to you and, when it inevitably is targeted by removal, just sacrifice her to Brion's ability to hit the opponent in the face. Other than that, Gift of Immortality is an excellent way to keep bringing back the creatures that you intend/have to sacrifice to Brion every turn.

Also, it's a bit boring but I would recommend Staff of Nin just to get some decent card draw in there, as there isn't much in the way of that in Boros colours.

This is a cool take on Brion. I would add Chromatic Lantern since this list is really red mana symbol heavy. As another win con that is also on theme and sorta budget friendly, Insurrection is a good finisher.

Workman4137 says... #19

The one real problem in the deck i see is the lack of card draw. A Staff of Nin, Howling Mine or even a Mind's Eye would work wonders in the deck if you're willing to get some extra card draw. Especially if someone plays a Consecrated Sphinx while you have a mind's eye!

Shockwave115, Atavistic, Permafrost, Workman4137 Thank you all sooooo much!

Shockwave: Thanks for all the insight! Of your suggestions Avarice Amulet will be squeezed in and Chandra's Ignition is under consideration! The creatures you suggest may find their way in, but I don't know what to cut. Gift of Immortality may also find it's way BACK in haha! Thanks again for the tips and hope to see you again!

Atavistic: Welcome! Gisela always seemed overpriced to me... both mana and $$$. Still, she's good and I'll give her a second look. Gift of Immortality may come back in... Not sure where though. Staff of Nin Looks good. Just wish is wasn't 6 mana. Thanks for the advice!

Permafrost: Thanks for the comment! Chromatic Lantern is over budget(if only by a little) and isn't really necessary, I always seem to have what I need with the rare exception. But since it's strictly better than some of the stuff I have in here, it will go in when I upgrade the deck eventually! Insurrection is neat but my meta has a LOT of boardwipes(sliver player...yikes) and Homeward Paths so it's only useful half of the time. Thanks a lot!

Workman: Welcome back! Lots of repeat costumers here haha! Card draw hasn't been a huge problem(Well of Lost Dreams saves lives), but you're right, there isn't enough. Staff of Nin and Avarice Amulet are going in I think so that'll clear that up! Thank you!

Again, one final thank you to all you guys! Keep the comment coming!
