Back on Clamp & Lucky Animals —Feb. 11, 2020

Cuts: Springleaf Drum, Lotus Cobra, Overeager Apprentice, Autumn's Veil

Adds: Utopia Sprawl, Stonecoil Serpent, Kambal, Consul of Allocation, Skullclamp

A small update to take out some of the cards in testing that didn't perform as well as others for these past months, while also adding a couple of cards that have shown a lot of promise.

Utopia Sprawl comes in to support Wild Growth in cheap mana ramp that dodges Cursed Totem and Null Rod, all while allowing the deck to combo off easier with Earthcraft if you enchant a basic land with the Aura. The 1cmc creature fixing piece in Springleaf Drum got cut from Sprawl's slot due to requiring creatures to tap, something that we are in high demand of already because of requiring creatures to attack for Tymna card draw.

Stonecoil Serpent is a card that's been tested in a couple of off-the-road Farm brews, and I've warmed up to the card enough to include it officially to my list. Stonecoil does a lot in the deck; other than being a cheap farm animal that is immune to multicolor removal and can hit through commanders, it also has Reach which is sometimes very relevant when combined with protection from multicolored. Essentially, Stonecoil is a Tymna beater that scales up, and that can also become an eternal chump blocker against opposing generals. This includes Deathtouchers like Yarok or Gitrog, fliers like Feather, the Redeemed, or just mere opposing Tymnas, and this flexibility has warranted a slot for testing. Being 0 life loss from Ad Nauseam is just the cherry on top. For the Serpent I took another one out; Lotus Cobra, while an explosive mana production outlet, is a pretty fragile and hardly missed piece outside of certain borderline Ad Nauseam lines, which is why it's coming back to the bench now.

Kambal is a weirder include in this list, as it looks like it's an off-theme creature due to being an hatebear of sorts. However, Kambal's power of lifegain is perfectly on theme with this deck, allowing for easier routes to advance your life totals to unbeatably high levels. On top of it all, it forces people to play Magic sub-optimally, which is a welcome bonus to the card. I took out Overeager Apprentice for Kambal due to both being pretty beefy in their converted mana cost, and because the deck relies on Leonin Relic-Warder being discarded for a net sum of 0 mana only very, very rarely.

Finally, Skullclamp is back, just like I promised! As we don't play blue, having multiple ways to draw cards tutored to the top of the library is of high importance, and using Clamp to keep opponents on their toes is always a welcome line to take in addition. Autumn's Veil got back to the bench mainly because of the deck already running enough protection pieces, most of which also disrupt opposing combo attempts consistently. Green veil effects don't disrupt opponents as much, so having multiples of them felt unneeded from my testing experiences.
