Budget and Stradegy update. —Nov. 29, 2016

While Threatenesque cards are fun and junk, they're really not ideal. Really you just want your classic Boros removal package.

I also happened to run across a few great deals that really let me upgrade the deck to help it run more effectively to where this is no longer a budget deck.

In: Conqueror's Flail; Hamletback Goliath; Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker; Phyrexian Dreadnought; Weathered Wayfarer; Wurmcoil Engine; Chaos Warp; Enlightened Tutor; Buried Ruin; Clifftop Retreat; Land Tax.

Angelic Accord did amazing work for me when I ran Brion. You almost always gain 4 a turn between a fling/swing, which makes you a 4/4 angel which lets you fling it which makes a 4/4 angel, etc.

Outpost Siege might be the most underrated Boros draw option. I mean, it's not Phyrexian Arena, but it's pretty good. 1/3 of the time it's your land drop and the rest of the time the card is mostly playable. I wouldn't run it in a deck with black, blue or green but in mono-red or Boros it's a really solid draw option.

Given that commander tuck isn't a thing anymore I'd just run Swords to Plowshares over Condemn. I mean, yeah it sucks giving them life, but I'd rather give my opponents a few life than be stuck staring at a Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur or Damia, Sage of Stone that isn't going to attack but is still ruining my day.

dana.roach- Thanks for the suggestions! This is literally my first draft. Just got though with it last night. I kept cards like Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile out at first because I'm trying to keep this under a 200$ budget. I wanted to make sure I hit that mark first before I upgraded any packages. So that's why Condemn (for now). What would you suggest cutting for those two cards?

Thornbite Staff is a card I have a tough time thinking will pull it's weight. I run it in a deathtouch deck where it kills anything it hits and even there it's near being cut. 2 to cast, 4 to equip and 2 to use is just so much mana.

I personally would also be tempted to pull Dictate of the Twin Gods just because I hate cards that can burn me, but that might just be me.

Well anytime you use Brion Stoutarm's ability it would cause him to untap. I've considered cutting the twin gods. But like i said. First draft. We'll see how everything goes. I'll definitely keep you updated though.

Hijack is new. As cheap as the rest but has added functionality.

October 11, 2016 6:11 p.m.

Oooohhhh I like Hijack! I'll look into it definitely!

Phyrexian Dreadnought is a funny one, if pricey. The sacrifice part isn't a cost, so it happens when it ETB so you can use Brion's ability as a response and sac is higher in the stack, saving your creatures.

I think it needs more Threaten-style cards so that you can exploit more of your opponent's creatures with Brion Stoutarm.

Good options I would consider would be Zealous Conscripts, Molten Primordial, Conquering Manticore, and Word of Seizing.

Archon of Justice also sounds like something hilarious to sacrifice.

Hamletback Goliath is something that you can build up for a turn, then fling for consistent one-shot lethal Commander damage.

Brion's fling does not count as commander damage.

Yup. Had to break that sad news to my roommate a while back since his favorite EDH deck is Brion.

October 11, 2016 9:25 p.m.

cjackson891: I'm aware that it's not commander damage. :) It still deals plenty of damage to kill someone straight up.

Optimator: I like Phyrexian Dreadnaught, but like you said it's a little pricey. :/

Austin_Smith_of_Cards: That was the original style of this deck, but I found that it's better and more reliable to be self-proficient. I found Threaten-style effects to be more of an answer to a particular problem rather than a win-con. This is just in my play-group, mind you. People tend to play smaller, but more efficient creatures if I just start taking all their stuff, so I'm pushing nowhere near as much damage through. I provide my own damage output, but Threatenesque cards are used as this deck's Doom Blade, Murder, and other removal spells of the like.

Deathstroke2791 The fact that Commander damage is only dealt by combat damage makes me a very sad potato. At least my Kresh EDH deck still works as intended, but Chandra's Ignition and Fling just got a little worse.

October 12, 2016 10:23 a.m.

Well with all the big freaking creatures I have: Serra Avatar, Malignus, Artisan of Kozilek, Desolation Twin, etc. Chandra's Ignition does just fine. Notice Fling is not in the deck. I'm not aiming for commander damage by the way.

Phyrexian Soulgorger is decent fodder

Someone might have pointed this out already, but Besmirch is strictly better than Act of Treason and Threaten if the double red isn't a problem.

Looking good! +1 from me.

I would swap a few of your mana rocks for creatures that can get you lands. Boros is really hard for both ramp and draw, so pulling extra lands out of the deck is going to be the next best thing. Kor Cartographer, Burnished Hart, Knight of the White Orchid and Weathered Wayfarer are all good, and they can serve as chump blockers or fodder when you need them to, unlike a mana rock.

I'd also recommend swapping one of your basics for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.

October 19, 2016 1:17 p.m.

RazortoothMtg: I chose Hijack and Word of Seizing over Act of Treason and Threaten because of their versatility. You're right Besmirch is better and I didn't know about it. But I can just get more out of Hijack and Word of Seizing.

NoSoyYucateco: Weathered Wayfarer and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx are a no go because of price. So unless the rest of the deck can get cheaper, then that's just out of range.

October 20, 2016 5:09 p.m.

Might I suggest Pyromancer's Goggles. It's artifact ramp, and can copy your spells.

October 20, 2016 9:37 p.m.

Worth considering. I'll look into it though. The only thing that concerns me is that it's 5 converted mana cost. With that high of a mana cost I'd really want it to produce more mana since I'm focused on my high cost creatures rather than my instants and sorceries.

May I suggest Avarice Amulet for Outpost Siege. The equipment will give you a card give like outpost siege and give your commander vigilance so you can still swing block and fling. I also think Vicious Shadows could do some good here

October 21, 2016 7:29 a.m.

Both excellent suggestions. I'll have to playtest them and let you know what I think.

I'm a big fan of chucking creatures into people's faces. I used to greatly enjoy Bosh, Iron Golem that way as well, way back when. +1!
