I have long awaited for some sort of Squirrel commander. That tribe has held a special place in my heart since I was a wee lad. Alas, I think my wait is in vain. I have decided to finally move forward with building the squirrel tribal EDH deck that I have long wished for. Hopefully Wizards will give the tribe some more support in the future (outside of Unstable sets).

Story Time

It took me forever to find a commander as none of them really seemed to fit. I thought about Rhys the Redeemed (probably the best choice), but I don't like Selesnya. I thought about Meren of Clan Nel Toth as I love reanimator strategies and she is pretty great with Deranged Hermit. Unfortunately, as I started to build the deck I found myself including too many Rats (because Swarmyard) which muddled my tribal strategy. I also considered Kamahl, Fist of Krosa or Baru, Fist of Krosa which both supply overrun effects.

So far Earl of Squirrel, Patron of Orochi, and Kamahl, Fist of Krosa have all led this deck. Patron was too slow and I never found myself casting it. Kamahl was a great win-con, but I often found myself getting targeted because Kamahl scared people. The Earl was fantastic as I loved having an anthem sitting in the command zone. However, he isn't a legal card. As a result, I landed on Kaysa as the commander. She provides the same anthem effect as The Earl, but she is much more unassuming than Kamahl. Plus her artwork is just gorgeous.

The Squirrel Legion

I have included just about all of the top squirrel focused cards.

Squirrel Mob and Krosan Beast - Our heaviest hitting squirrels. It is a shame that neither have trample, but we have other ways of providing that.

Squirrel Nest - Our go-to and most consistent squirrel maker

Squirrel Wrangler, Deranged Hermit, Nut Collector, and Liege of the Hollows - Each of these druids make squirrels and/or can pump said squirrels.

Chatter of the Squirrel and Acorn Harvest - one shot token making effects that also have flashback

Birthing Boughs also makes "squirrels"

Grow the Squirrels

Kaysa, Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, Metallic Mimic, Deranged Hermit, Nut Collector, Squirrel Wrangler, Deepforest Hermit, Overwhelming Stampede, Return of the Wildspeaker and Beastmaster Ascension can all pump our squirrel army.

Said army can double in size thanks to Second Harvest, Parallel Evolution, and Parallel Lives. Additional reinforcements come from Sandwurm Convergence, Selesnya Eulogist, and Ezuri's Predation

Protect the Squirrels

Swarmyard - regenerates important squirrels and Silklash Spider

Heroic Intervention - mass protection is great!

Asceticism - provides more regeneration and a shield against spot removal

Silklash Spider and Sandwurm Convergence - these stop any aerial predators of the squirrels

Interact with the Squirrels

Mimic Vat, Helm of the Host, and Temur Sabertooth pair extremely well with Deranged Hermit and Deep Forest Hermit as they allow us to have more ETB effects.

Voyaging Satyr, Arbor Elf, and Seedborn Muse allow for more Squirrel Nest activations.

Skullclamp, Shamanic Revelation, Return of the Wildspeaker, Regal Force, and Slate of Ancestry - Extremely potent card draw when making a lot of 1/1 squirrels.

Honorary Squirrels

Chameleon Colossus - Is actually a squirrel

Temur Sabertooth - Can protect important creatures as well as continuously bounce Deranged Hermit, Deep Forest Hermit, and Regal Force.

Yeva, Nature's Herald - Provides flash to creatures

Scavenging Ooze and Selesnya Eulogist - Some good old fashioned graveyard hate

Concordant Crossroads - Grants the team haste

Since this deck relies heavily on certain creatures, 4 creature tutors are run: Green Sun's Zenith, Natural Order, Worldly Tutor, and Chord of Calling.

Suggestions for improvements are always appreciated! However, PLEASE DO NOT SUGGEST Earthcraft. Any suggestions including that card will not be considered.
