I'm trying to make my Animar deck competitive, while including an unexpected element: hydra tribal. X-cost creatures are good with Animar because you can cast them for any amount of mana depending on the need, and they can always make full use of every counter on Animar. Mistcutter Hydra is insanely useful in certain matchups for its natural protection from blue (plus Animar's pro black and white, which can be expanded to pro red and blue with Sword of Fire and Ice). There are also hydras with double strike, flying, haste, can't-be-countered, trample, double their counters (once or every upkeep), double the counters on all of your creatures, draw cards, gain life, gain counters, and the ability to redistribute their counters to other creatures when they die. Doubling Season can create some absurdly large hydras.

I've included Ancestral Statue for the infinite counters combo with Animar (and infinite damage with Purphoros, God of the Forge on the field). Tezzeret the Seeker tutors for Ancestral Statue or The Ozolith, which I expect to be insanely helpful in helping Animar bounce back from being killed (one of the weak points of this deck). Cards like Forgotten Ancient, Give / Take, and Increasing Savagery are also essential to rebuilding your board after a board wipe. You want to get counters on Animar as soon as possible.

Colorless creatures like Solemn Simulacrum, Artisan of Kozilek, and the big drop Eldrazis Kozilek, Butcher of Truth and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger are very important, since they could cost 0 mana to cast and could be part of an infinite combo with Cloudstone Curio. Right now I'm not running Cloudstone Curio in my list, though, as it's relatively complex to set up.

Temur Ascendancy, Lightning Greaves, and Concordant Crossroads give haste! Nylea, God of the Hunt and Pridemalkin give trample, which is especially useful when you're going for commander damage, since Animar doesn't naturally have trample.

We have a set of cards enabling us to draw, including Beast Whisperer, Consecrated Sphinx, Fathom Mage, Glimpse of Nature, Mulldrifter, Primal Empathy, and Soul of the Harvest.

Finally, a handful of blue answers such as Keep Safe, Counterspell, Willbender, and Cyclonic Rift help keep everything under control (Cyclonic Rift is also a potential win condition by clearing all opposing blockers) as well as removal like Pongify, Rapid Hybridization, Acidic Slime, and Reclamation Sage.
