Ambassador Laquatus: Budget Mill

Commander / EDH* Counters Mill Mono-Blue Proliferate

pdjford97

Hello world! My desire to build somthing new to surprise my playgroup with, combined with my subpar financial standings, has led me to this super budget mill build. Starting with $30, (not counting basic lands), I wanted to see if I could find somthing fun to shuffle up.

Ambassador Laquatus jumped out at me well looking for underrated (and therefore fairly cheap) commanders. Being in blue, there's a good array of both interaction, card selection, and advantage. All on cards that cost pennys!

The Ambassador offers mill in exchange for mana, and sense we can pay 3 any number of times, making infinite mana seems like the ticket to wins. However, our budget means that the easy ones aren't going to make the cut. So instead of Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter we have these:

Astral Cornucopia + Filigree Sages

The easiest combo, sense it's only 2 cards. This also makes infinant blue.

Basalt Monolith + Voltaic Construct This is another easy combo. Basalt Monolith is interchangeable with Thran Dynamo , Everflowing Chalice or Astral Cornucopia as well.

Basalt Monolith + Heartstone + Karn's Touch Karn's Touch and Toymaker are interchangeable in this combo

Basalt Monolith + Dross Scorpion + Thopter Squadron Not as intuitive, but a combo with interchangeable peices. Basalt Monolith can be swapped for Thran Dynamo , Everflowing Chalice or Astral Cornucopia . Thropter Squadron can be swapped for Pentivis as well. hearthstone can be used in this combo, so with the reduced cost of Thropter Squadrons abilities it works with any mana rock.

What if the mana line of play doesn't come together? That's ok, because Thropter Squadron + Heartstone + Selhoff Occultist is also infinant mill. Selhoff Occultist can also be changed out for Altar of the Brood , and the combo still works too!

Now, that's a lot of combo potential, but you have to ramp into and set it up. So of course theres another facet of this list: Storm/Proliferate. Flux Channeler as well as Inexorable Tide function as storm pay offs, and can load up Astral Cornucopia or Everflowing Chalice with counters. This could be for more mana to power out large spells, or to set up a combo on a later turn. Then we run the storage lands, Saprazzan Cove , Sand Silos and Mage-Ring Network as back up targets. Tidesprout Tyrant was a hard consideration for this deck, but I finally decided he was worth the $5. (Maybe I can score a damaged one for $1). He of course functions as a control/interaction peice, but also combos with any 0 cmc spells to generate infinant storm, which means infinant proliferate as well! Paradoxical Outcome can also fuel large strom payoffs, and can net some card advantage. Somthing else to consider is Thropter Squadron and Pentivas can become beefcake with a few more +1/+1 counters, making for some great game steeling attackers!

Everything else is just interaction and card selection/cantrips. Basically anything less than $1. I'm highly open to suggestions and will likely keep revising this list as I aquire the cards and play it IRL, but for now this seems like the ticket for a fun versatile list to enjoy.
