Deck: Always Use Protection | Rebbec + Akiri

This deck focuses on utilizing and abusing Rebbec's protection ability. Akiri is here for red. This deck doesn't need to be Boros, but I want it to be. So there.

With Rebbec, our artifacts can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by anything with a CMC of the artifacts we control.

The way we abuse Rebbec's ability is having a good mix of converted mana costs throughout our artifacts, so all of our artifacts will be protected from a majority of spells. Next, because protection from a CMC makes creatures unblockable and unable to be damaged by creatures of that CMC, artifact creatures we control become masters of combat, able to attack unharmed and unblocked, or block without taking damage. This means we can swing with huge creatures for the knockout win in many scenarios. Along the same lines, vehicles, especially those with vigilance and combat effects, become very powerful.

Another factor we can explore is damage wipes that won't touch our creatures but hit everyone else.

A critical weakness of this deck is the susceptibility to mass artifact/creature destruction that doesn't target. So Boros Charm and Tef's Protection are here to save us. Darksteel forge also does the trick, and opponents will find out how hard it is to get rid of indestructable, protected artifacts. Since we plan to have a considerable board presence for the entire game, huge creature buffs like Jor Kadeen or Tampered Steel will be great for closing the damage gap.

Even if that doesn't work out, we have a pretty healthy recursion package.

Numerous cards create artifact tokens or artifact creature tokens, which is great against token decks. Artifact lands do the same thing.

Small creatures and mana rocks in the 1-3 CMC range help us against removal and opponent's utility creatures. Artifacts and creatures in the 4-5 range protect us from most commanders. The 6+ CMC stuff is there for beats or game ending plays.

It should be noted that equipment don't really work in this deck, except on our non-artifact creatures.

Specific card choices:

  • Liquimental Coating can make anything that is not an artifact an artifact for a turn, which can kill spot removal with Rebbec's protection ability. Mostly here to protect Rebbec.
  • Inspiring Statuary doesn't help us cast artifacts, but it allows all of our artifacts to help pay for Rebbec. Since she is a crucial part of the deck, she needs to be out as much as possible. Statuary lets us do this long into the late game.
  • Parhellion II is perhaps the scariest threat we can make. Protected, vigilent, flying, and an army in a can.
  • Deretti, Scrap Savant is a multi-use powerhouse. Recursion, card selection, graveyard filling.
  • Ugin, the Ineffable is another multi-use king. Removal, Card draw, token producing, and cost reducing.
  • Teshar, Ancestor's Apostle keeps our board on the field just because we cast artifacts. (P.S. I am not looking to make this deck another Teshar combo deck. I do this every time.)
  • Akiri Lineslinger, as stated, is mostly here for the color red. But her power-buff synergy with artifacts makes her a viable threat as well. She is also fantastic at crewing vehicles. The ability to make her an unblockable artifact creature makes voltron a legit win-con.
