Back to review and make changes to my beloved deck —Oct. 15, 2019

I'm back to review cards from the latest three sets that we might want to add to this deck. Here's a list of cards that I added and the ones I had to remove to make room for the new ones:

  • Cards added:

-- Arcane Signet and Talisman of Conviction: Early game rocks that will produce WR. Instant addition to the deck. Arcane Signet is a straight up better Fellwar Stone, so I know what I'll remove to add it. Talisma of Convition is a better Boros Signet but I also want to play the Signet. So, I think it's time to say goodbye to Chrome Mox. As much as I like it, it's always a risky play because it 2-for-1 ourselves and on top of that, trades mana for action.

-- Brought Back: Very flexible instant speed, gy recursion spell. I've been very impressed with how it performs in NatePrawdzik's Breya deck. It can be used proactively--that is, you plan on sac'ing permanents and bring it back--or in response to what your opponents' removals. Obviously, it has good synergy with our late-game board-wipes (Cataclysm and Jokulhaups).

-- Ranger-Captain of Eos and Giant Killer: Another Ranger of Eos to tutor for our amazing one-drops (Goblin Welder, Serra Ascendant, Weathered Wayfarer, Mother of Runes). That's an easy addition to the deck. However, now that we have two Rangers of Eos, I thought that the addition of Giant Killer would make the one-drop package more versatile, so now it covers threat (ascendant), gy recursion (welder), protection (mother) and removal (killer). The new Ranger can also stop combos, protect our own late-game combo (whole board-wipes) and we can use it in conjunction with Brought Back for double one-drop tutor. How sick is that?

-- Dockside Extortionist: This little guy will make Akiri lethal because it produces a degenerate amount of Treasures in the mid and late game. Of course, it will also ramp like crazy. Treasure is a single-turn ramp but usually all that we need to jokul/cataclysm with mana floating and then drop enough threats to take over the game.

-- Prismatic Vista: Another fetch. Removing a Snow-Covered Plains to make room for it.

  • Cards removed:

-- Chrome Mox, Mox Diamond, Bazaar of Baghdad, Collective Effort, Celestial Purge, Snow-Covered Plains and Fellwar Stone: Mostly just finding room for the new cards. It really hurts me to remove the moxen but everything else is so tight. We are trading speed for safety there. Time will tell if that's a good or bad thing...

I was just scrolling around tappedout, chilling, and i stumbled into this. Man you are good and rising my enthusiasm xd i'm a big fan of the aplication of legacy ideas to edh, as you can probably tell already. I will give this deck some thought when i wanna build something alike. Right now between grenzo and my other edh decks i don't really have the mental capacity to process more stuff. Let me say i'm super glad i found you cause the stuff you build is very much the kind of stuff i aspire to build :P

@duffman24, thanks for dropping by. Those are two very interesting suggestions. I've tested one of them-- Experimental Frenzy --in another deck (my mono-red Grenzo list) and it was just okay. It's definitely not as good as Outpost Siege . In addition to a skewed mana curve, frenzy will only shine when we have access to top deck manipulation, like a sensei or scroll rack. We cannot play multiple lands per turn, too, and that's often a problem with frenzy (you play a land and then there's another land, so you're forced to pass). There's another card, Stolen Strategy , that does something somewhat similar to Outpost Siege . At first glance, that card seems to be much better than outpost and frenzy but in practice, it's actually pretty mediocre. The problem is that more likely than not, you'll exile lands, and you cannot cast lands, and when it's not lands, you'll likely exile some irrelevant spell from your opponents. Of course, the value of such a card will scale with the quality of the decks that you are playing against, but so far, my experience with it tells me that it's actuall worse than frenzy and much worse than outpost. In the same vein, there's a new card called Light Up the Stage that I've tested extensively and is really, really good in aggro lists. I've removed ascendancy to find a space for it--that's how good Light Up the Stage is. (I've updated the list to reflect that change.)

Now, let's talk about Smothering Tithe . The card ramps like crazy because no one ever pays for it (unless 1v1'ing or 2v1'ing) and has pretty good synergy with Akiri (each treasure is a +1/+0). That said, unless you have a reliable way of spending the mana it generates, the card is only okay. Say, if our commanders had an activated ability like Thrasios, Triton Hero , this card would be very good because it would allow us to use the mana to generate card advantage. However, that's not the case and this makes me very reluctant to play smothering tithe here. I've no doubt that frenzy takes precedence over smothering tithe in any boros list. Our main issue is card advantage and we need all the help we can get to generate card advantage, not necessarily ramp. However, it also works pretty well with jokulhaups, so that might be something to consider. I guess I'll have to test it at some point.

Hey so I am somewhat of a Boros expert myself with Aurelia being my main. Ive played your decklist 3 or 4 times and i have some questions. First one is, why run cataclysm and jokulhaups over something like Armageddon , Ravages of War , and Boom/bust? These help lockout the game when you're ahead, Cat and Jok only help when you're behind and are unplayable when you're ahead. I guess i just don't see the situation where you would want them. Next I really think you need to be running Smothering Tithe I was staring at Wheel and Idyllic tutor in my hand and I knew that would have been lethal on someone if it were in there. I also feel like without smothering tithe there weren't really good targets for idyllic tutor (outpost siege was already in play at that moment in time). Fiery confluence really has done much for me either, I replaced with Chaos warp. There were some other removal card choices that seemed odd as well, like Orim's chant. I am personally a wear/tear crush contraband, and return to dust fan if you're going to be spending that much mana. However certain metas do require things like Crush and Smelt . Also the land count seems light for the hedge mage. Ive had some inconsistent starts because of that. So yeah for me personally, I've noticed some issue in actually closing the game out and being able to stop opponents. Have you run into similar issues? What type of decks do you run against typically, since I know that can make a big different. I would guess at least some blue combo stuff with the REB and PBlast and the matrix. Rule of Law seems like it could be a strong addition especially if you are facing combo. I feel like some evasion equipments could also be really good something like a Tenza, Godo's Maul , Trailblazer's Boots or even Cobbled Wings . Anyway I wanted to get some insight on some of these thing. I am slowly working on my own list as my old one is quite outdated. But the idea is to lock up the game with land destruction, winter orb, or possibility storm.
