Welcome to Kathril, Aspect Warper EDH. If you like playing creatures with loads of abilities, then this deck might be for you!

This deck has three major axis through which you can kill opponents, and pursuing one does not necessarily lock you out of the other options. Due to the nature of Kathril, Aspect Warper's ability, this deck is a "keyword soup" list. As such, each individual creature has plenty of keyword abilities that help it excel in combat. Thus, one of your game plans can be to play an attacking-oriented midrange deck, because many of your creatures are pretty strong in combat. In addition to this traditional beatdown line, the deck utilizes its graveyard as an extra source of value. There are plenty of effects to place cards into your graveyard in order to activate plans two and three.

Plan two is to kill opponents using a "voltron"-esque strategy with a big scary Kathril, Aspect Warper. With 8 distinct keyword abilities in the graveyard, Kathril becomes an 11/11 creature once all counters have been placed making him lethal in two hits. Note: double strike is a Kathril-supported keyword, which can make him lethal in one attack in this scenario, should it be in the graveyard. It is also important to note that Kathril can place keywords on any creatures under your control. This allows you to spread out keywords onto the most effective targets and still grow Kathril into a huge threat.

Plan three is a reanimator game plan. With many ways to get big threats into the graveyard, it was easy to add some reanimation tools to the deck to allow the deck to power out big threats for cheap. This strategy can be played in tandem with plan two, so long as Kathril is cast first to allow him to become a scary, keyword-ridden threat.

You will like this deck if:

  • You enjoy attacking with creatures.

  • You like when your graveyard is a source of card advantage.

  • You want to play with creatures that have a lot of cool keywords.

You will not like this deck if:

  • You prefer to cast instants and sorceries.

  • You don't want to be recurring the same threats potentially multiple times in a game.

  • You like comboing off to finish the game.

Graveyard enablers:

  • Satyr Wayfinder and Grisly Salvage are excellent early setup cards that allow you to find a card you need to smooth your early draws out while also building up your graveyard.

  • Nyx Weaver and Perpetual Timepiece are slow but steady ways to passively add cards to your graveyard that also serve as protection from graveyard exiling effects.

  • Entomb, Buried Alive, and Jarad's Orders are good ways to find just the right keywords to place into your graveyard to make the most out of Kathril, Aspect Warper's ability.

  • Deadbridge Chant dumps a large quantity of cards into your graveyard initially and then works slowly as a recursion piece.

  • Stitcher's Supplier is an excellent way to dump a handful of cards into your graveyard. The body can easily be used to chump block or to sacrifice to something like Birthing Pod to get the second set of three cards in the graveyard.

  • Fauna Shaman can be used to dump expensive, keyword heavy cards that might get stuck in your hand into the graveyard for later fuel for either Kathril or a reanimation spell. In addition, you can then find helpful creatures that will help keep you stable through the midgame.

  • Golgari Grave-Troll can put a lot of cards into your graveyard and can then become a big threat that's hard to deal with. If it does end up dying, it can just dump more cards into the bin and recur itself!

  • Underrealm Lich and Selective Adaptation provide card selection that also fills up the graveyard with important cards.

Top-notch keyword creatures:

  • Zetalpa, Primal Dawn just does so much for this deck. It has five extremely relevant keywords for Kathril, and as a threat on its own it is very hard to deal with.

  • Carnage Tyrant and Sigard, Host of Herons both provide the very useful and difficult to come by keyword hexproof.

  • Akroma, Angel of Wrath is the less-powerful cousin to Zetalpa, Primal Dawn in this deck. If haste were a Kathril-supported keyword, this card would be immensely better, but she is still a powerful card nonetheless.

  • Avacyn, Angel of Hope provides evasion in the form of flying as well as indestructible for Kathril. If she gets reanimated or played outright, it becomes very difficult for your opponents to deal with your board.

  • Nighthawk Scavenger and Aerial Responder both provide three keywords for the low cost of three mana. These are wonderful early midrange threats that when they die provide a ton of value in the graveyard. Nighthawk Scavenger is a big upgrade from Vampire Nighthawk because it grows in the late game.

  • Questing Beast may only provide two Kathril keywords in this list, but no keyword soup list would be complete without this card that does so much.

  • Elder Gargaroth provides three keywords, including trample, and has a very relevant ability for attacking and blocking. Extra cards are most often where you will be looking with this ability when it happens.

  • God-Eternal Oketra provides the hard-hitting ability of double strike and is a great midrange threat that can be reasonably cast.

  • Odric, Lunarch Marshal is absolutely bonkers in this list. Your entire team can have upwards of six to eight keywords on a good board, and it happens EACH combat, meaning your creatures have those abilities to block with as well. Note: Odric DOES support haste, so if you can get him on board with Akroma, Angel of Wrath you can have a lot of surprise damage.

Reanimation tools:

As always, suggestions are helpful for refining decks. It is most helpful if you can suggest a card to cut for each recommended card, and perhaps a reason why you think your suggestion is better than the removed card. Finally, don't forget to hit that +1 if you liked the deck!
