The Hour of Devastation's been over for quite a while now, and I'm sure everyone's already unleashed their endgame. I'm "a bit late", but there we go. I afflict you my endgame.

Operation: Endgame Affliction

(Non-present) Operation Leader:

This Salty Dragon

Bolas isn't really here, though we all know that he made the Eternals. With his high mana cost, he simply wouldn't be very useful in our deck. Plus he's pretty expensive in the paper world, too.

Operators (Afflict creatures and other creatures :P):

One-Drops:

  • Hexproofness Sevice on Wings - Square flyer. What it effectively does is giving its controller or target creature hexproof for a very short amount of time (by countering a spell/ability that targets it). Having this "semi-counterspell" on the battlefield is very annoying for the opponent.

Two-Drops:

  • Some Pale Kid With no Friends - 1/1 for two, drawing you a card. This is what you do when you've can't make friends: You make value.

  • The Somalian Skydiver - Flyer that turns opposing creatures to zero-power frogs. Very useful with afflict creatures, as it forces the opponent to either chump block and take afflict damage or to let the afflict creature go through and trigger whatever abilities it has that triggers when it isn't blocked.

  • Don't Tread on Me - Early game afflict creature. Prowess isn't that relevant in this deck, but this card's still better than the other 2-drop afflict creature, who's absolutely useless.

Three-Drops:

  • Blue Skeleton With an Overbite - Every time this dude (I think it's a dude, but I still shouldn't take the risk of assuming someone/something's gender) attacks, it's two damage. Unless the opponent has no creatures/doesn't have a creature that effectively blocks this guy, they aren't going to let us get one damage in and draw a card. Of course, every time we attack with this, we still hope to get that one card.

  • Illuminati Beast - First off, look closely at its forehead. You should see it. This thing is way above the curve and has afflict 3. The downside? Every time the opponent casts a spell, it gets -1/-1. But every time it deals combat damage, those counters are removed. So, the choice on their part is: Suffer three damage and (most likely) lose a creature or suffer five damage and have this thing back at full strength? The first option feels better most of the time, but both are pretty bad.

  • Some Bones Holding a Stick - We only have two copies because it doesn't actually do any afflicting and we already have powerful three-drops. Still, it is very powerful. It pumps other zombies, which means every single afflict creature, like a classic lord. The main power of this card is giving all our zombies menace at the cost of and tapping. This makes them way harder to block, which means it's easier to trigger their "when not blocked" abilities.

Four-Drops:

  • Chandra's Dog - This dude is quite underrated right now, but his effects really do put the opponent into a harsh position: Eat four damage, or risk having a gigantic spell thrown at them. Plus, with four toughness, he doesn't die to stuff like Abrade or Lightning Strike.

Five-Drops:

  • One Triggered Sheep - The Big Daddy of the deck. Pretty beefy at 4/6, and very dangerous with afflict 3. Also nets you some free mana every time after combat.

  • Some Depressed Girl - Synergizes very well with the zombie subtheme. The ultimate is almost a Plague Wind in this deck.

Operation Weaponry (Instants & Sorceries):

Removal:

  • Karate Kick - Self-explanatory. Auto-include in all black decks. Great against aggro.

  • Abrade - Kills artifacts and smaller creatures.

  • "Zap!" - Pretty classic burn spell.

  • The Power of Staring - Used mainly to stare at gods or 'walkers until they die.

Other Stuff:

(Mana) Base of Operation:

Budget Package:

Mana base must be downgraded. Enter an Island, a Swamp, a Mountain, and three extra The Average College Library. Leave only one copy of each of the dual lands.

Removal must be downgraded. The Power of Staring has spiked quite a lot recently (I should've bought a second playset while it was only for seven bucks, as a lot of my decks need it). In its place, we would enter Hour of Glory, which is almost strictly worse, but a lot more budget-friendly. For the playset of Karate Kicks, we take in two Walk the Planks, an extra Abrade and an extra "Zap!".

Some Depressed Girl can't stay either. We'll replace her with another copy of One Triggered Sheep. At this point, as we have three copies of Neheb, I'd also move It's Raining Tacos into the main deck.

The sideboard will also see changes: When you get griefed in Minecraft will move out. Sweltering Suns moves in. We might also kick The Locust God out and replace it with Accursed Horde for further budget-friendliness.

Competitive Package:

To fully empower this deck, we actually need quite a few updates. First off, in the manabase, let's remove the Evolving Wilds for one extra copy for each dual land. Second, enter Harbinger of Bankruptcy. We replace a copy of this One Triggered Sheep and a copy of Chandra's Dog with two copies of the God. This would greatly increase the power of our deck, at the cost of 60-70 bucks in the paper world. These are the major upgrades I'd make to the main deck.

As for the sideboard, it looks as though we could benefit from one extra copy of Liliana and This Salty Dragon. So Bolas may actually have a spot in this deck. They can be put into one of the flex slots we have.

So, this is it! Happy tapping, kiddos, and don't forget to upvote if you feel like my endgame has been successfully afflicted upon you!
