Takeaways from first 3 games —Aug. 14, 2022

Finally got some games in with Anhelo. The deck performed better in each subsequent game, but I think that was in part to me getting more comfortable with the deck.

  • Game 1- This game took place well over a month ago, so I don't remember the other commanders that were around the table, except for my friend's Yurlok of Scorch Thrash deck. In short summary, my friend playing Yurlok used a symmetrical land destruction card, which ended up screwing me the most (unintentional, it was fine). I missed the most land drops and couldn't rebuild a decent board state, so I was quickly killed in combat by the other 3 decks.

  • Game 2 - This game was last weekend. Highlights: I was able to get a Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephali on board T2 to help wtih token set up. As the only spellslinger deck at the table, I still had the squishiest board in comparison to everyone else. I drew into a Dualcaster Mage around T5 and had Demonic Tutor as part of my opening 7. I rushed tutoring for Twinflame and Swan Song about a turn early. Everyone rightfully focused their attention on me the turn rotation after. I didn't have any other creatures in hand, or draw into any, so had to recast Anhelo to have a creature to target with Twincast. The table finished me off in that turn rotation after.

  • Game 3 - Also from last weekend. First W for the deck. The two all-star cards for this game were Pulse of the Grid and Bloodghast. I was consistently hitting land drops for Bloodghast due in part to my repeated and copied casts of Pulse of the Grid. I was often 1-2 cards behind someone else at the table, and would return Pulse of the Grid to my hand, after having copied it. I think I cast and copied Pulse of the Grid 3 times before I didn't meet the recursion clause. I filtered through a lot of land drops I wouldn't have needed, and pitched them to my yard as Escape fodder for Underworld Breach. I was able to draw into various burn spells like Breath of Malfegor and consistently copy them. Breath of Malfegor was one of the cards I re-cast with Underworld Breach, so over its 2 casts and Casualty copies, it dealt 20 damage to each opponent. I ended up finishing everyone with a copied Jaya's Immolating Inferno, where X=6.

Thanks for the suggestion Coward_Token. Deck is still fairly early in play-testing, so I'm still getting a feel for what fits and what doesn't. Twinning Staff is definitely on my radar. My Moxfield version of the decklist has a more extensive Maybe/Considering Board than this one.

I’m most excited for this commander over several others coming out! One card I think could prove valuable would be Elemental Expressionist. While Anhelo only gives your first instant or sorcery Casualty, the Expressionist seems like both an enabler for future Casualty and a payoff for when you copy spells with Casualty. Suits the Artist theme too!

Thank you for the suggestion Orpheus124. I kinda forgot about Elemental Expressionist tbh. If I'm reading this correctly, would its ability be used to target tokens that get sacrificed to Casualty, and the token essentially replaces itself with a 4/4 elemental token?

That’s how I’m interpreting it, Crow-Umbra. You may need a Casualty sacrifice to start off that reaction though, since you don’t create the token until the exile happens.

Is that a replacement effect, or does the death trigger still happen? The wording there is a little different, but reads as though the death trigger should still happen.

Orpheus124 and bushido_man96, I recently asked around about the potential Anhelo, the Painter / Elemental Expressionist interaction, and it doesn't seem like it will work. According to the person in one of my Discord servers, "Casualty is an extra cost as you cast it, like Village Rites. You won't be able to target the creature being sacrificed with Anhelo"

i recommend Lightning Coils gives you some sac fodder for your spells :O

Thank you for the suggestion AaronEchoes, I haven't seen Lightning Coils before. My only apprehension is that I have a kinda low non-creature count for the deck. I'll def keep an eye on this though

I wasn't super high on New Capenna as a whole, but I have to admit that Anhelo looks pretty awesome. This deck is really well constructed, too, as most of my recommendations I had ended up already being the deck. Bravo!

The only thing I think I'd recommend is Immolating Gyre. A nice boardwipe for spellslinger decks that could work really well here.

Thank you KBK7101, I appreciate! I haven't had a chance to play the deck irl yet, but it's ready to go next time my friends and I get together. I could see Immolating Gyre replacing Jaya's Immolating Inferno, especially since it can hit creatures and opponents simultaneously.

I'll be making my next batch of significant updates after getting some games in, and probably once Commander Legends 2 is dropped. Keeping an eye out for any spells from the set that could fit this build.

Might I suggest Arterial Flow in place of Skull Rend? While Anhelo is out, it does the same thing but cheaper and with a bit of lifegain. In the same vein, Anhelo lets you reap the full tribal rewards of New Blood and Blood Tribute by himself.

Oooo that's a good suggestion Cornonjacob07. I think I might've had it in consideration in the earliest drafts of the deck, but didn't include it for some reason.

Alternatively, another strong discard spell could be Rakdos's Return, also doing some damage

That's another cool one Cornonjacob07. I brewed up a Zevlor, Elturel Exile list, and have Rakdos's Return in that list, since I think it can get a bit more mileage with Zevlor's ability. I'll def keep it in consideration for this list.
