Hard-Hitting Abzan Midrange Awesomeness. Come at me, bro!

This deck has been transforming since prerelease, and I now feel it's reach a stable build. Originally built as an aggro deck, it's been my experince that the Abzan form is better suited to be midrange. Thus, my first official midrange deck!

I attended FNM at my LGS on October 3rd 2014 and the Star City Games Orlando GP Standard Challenge on October 4th with the deck when it was "aggro", and received invaluable insight and advice from many amazing Magic players. Their input led to the deck build you see today, full of powerful creatures and an awesome assortment of removal options.

+++++ On to the cards! +++++

+++++ The Creatures +++++

  • Anafenza, the Foremost: An amazing 4/4 3 drop that impacts the Sultai gameplan.
  • Brimaz, King of Oreskos: Possibly the best card in Standard, Brimaz is a natural fit in an Abzan midrange build. Hail to the King, baby!
  • Fleecemane Lion: One of the main reasons I'm playing Abzan. A great 3/3 2-drop that converts into a 4/4 hexproof/indestructible powerhouse. Also, can combo well with Wingmate Roc. If you attack with 5 mana open, your opponent may let the attack pass under the threat of monstrous. Instead, play Roc after the attack and you now have two 3/4 flyers out!
  • Herald of Torment : A solid recommendation from SCG GP Standard Challenge players. Providing 3/3 damage and sick evasion for only , it also offers bestow, which can be a vicious late-game play on any of this deck's aggressive beaters. How's a flying 7/8 Siege Rhino sound?!? Speaking of which...
  • Siege Rhino: An Abzan all-star that slams in for -3 life to them and +3 for you. The heart of any good Abzan build.
  • Rakshasa Deathdealer : A definite threat with either +2/+2 or regeneration for . Adds another level of mind games when you attack with open mana.
  • Sylvan Caryatid: Hexproof mana fixing and defense. A format staple. I currently only own two, but I think two is the right number for this deck.
  • Wingmate Roc: An ass-kicking flyer with an unbelievably good Raid ability. Two 3/4 flyers for ?!? And +1 life for each creature attacking with it? He's in.

+++++ The Spells +++++

  • Abzan Charm: One of the best charms in Khans. Removal, card draw or counters. Awesome options that help many situations.
  • Hero's Downfall: Premium creature and Planeswalker battlefield removal.
  • Murderous Cut: Creature removal that takes advantage of Delve.
  • Despise: Creature and Planeswalker hand removal. Throw their plans off quickly. This will ultimately go to the sideboard once I own three copies of...
  • Thoughtseize: Premium hand removal. Disrupts the plans of any type of deck.

+++++ The Planeswalkers +++++

  • Ajani Steadfast: A natural fit in this build. His +1 makes an attacker a real problem. His -2 can put Sorin over the top for a quick ultimate. At that point, let the sacrificing begin!
  • Sorin, Solemn Visitor: Lifelink until your next turn. Lifelink on offense and defense, in other words. Freaking. Awesome. Not to mention his -2 creates a 2/2 flying Vampire creature, and his ultimate forces the sacrifice of an opponent creature every upkeep. There's not many things more fun than reminding an opponent to sacrifice a creature when they gloss over it during their upkeep step.

I went 2-3 at FNM.

  • Game 1: Win, Red Heroic Weenie, 2-0. The person playing was younger and put the deck together himself. We talked about improving his deck after the match
  • Game 2: Loss, Mirror, 0-2. My opponent's deck ran 4 Courser of Kruphix whereas I have the Herald of Torment. My deck never really built up any steam and his ran smoothly.
  • Game 3: Loss, Mono-Red burn: 1-2. He burned the shit out of me. My one win came when he got mana-screwed.
  • Game 4: Win, Monoblack Aggro: 2-1. He won game 1 via speed. In games 2 and 3 he Thoughseized me an left Sorin each time. That was a mistake. A combo of Sorin and Ajani Steadfast won me game 3. Word has it he was upset about the loss.
  • Game 5: Loss, Monoblack Aggro, 0-2. Mogis's Marauder wrecked me two games in a row. I had the chance to remove him in game 2 via Despise but opted to make him discard Sorin. That was probably a mistake, but either way his deck was a real tough matchup.

With the results of PT KTK Honolulu out, I'm shifting my focus to developing a new version of this deck, The Abzan Supremacy Revolutions. Thanks to all that have helped me build this deck!

Long Live Abzan!
