Enchantment (1)

Creature (1)

Have you ever wanted to use the best creature type known to the world of magic but just didn't know how to go about it?

Lucky for you this deck combines the best parts of both interactive commander decks and a modern deck that wasn't good enough to see play.

This whole deck relies on the theory that spending should get you an inordinate amount of value, by abusing the spike's signature ability of spending to move counters between your creatures. How does it work?

Winding Constrictor, Corpsejack Menace, Hardened Scales, & Pir, Imaginative Rascal allow us to draw value from our spikes' abilities. This is the core mechanic of our deck.

Heartstone halves the ability of our spikes, and allows us double the value of our mana

Once we have a worthwhile exchange rate going on, there's a number of payoffs available for our spiky boys.

Etched Oracle, Generous Patron, Mindless Automaton, & Inspiring Call allow us to draw cards using our counters, even though once we have our engine up, we won't be playing many cards from our hand.

Cryptic Trilobite, Crystalline Crawler, Fertilid, Gyre Sage, Incubation Druid, Rishkar, Peema Renegade, & Jiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter allow us to use counters for mana and ramp, which enables us to perform the huge mana dumps we're looking for.

We have a lot of options for interacting with our opponents, since most people will become enraged with jealously when they see your sick spikes on the battlefield.

Cauldron of Souls, Cauldron Haze, Together Forever, Inspiring Call, Regrowth, & Vigor Mortis allow us to either prevent our creatures from dying, or bring them back if they do.

Together Forever is worth special mention in that you can target a creature with a counter on it, remove those counters for value, and get it back to your hand. This can be particularly effective with cards like Spike Feeder or Cryptic Trilobite.

However if our opponents are going to attack us just because we have better taste than them, we need to be prepared to hit back. This is where cards like Abzan Charm, Dromoka's Command, Deathsprout, Return to Nature, & Retribution of the Ancients comes into play. However, we should direct our efforts to out-valuing our opponents, rather than trying to stop them.

How do we stop them? By closing out the game But how? you ask, not trusting your 2/2 and 3/3 spikes to win the game for you. You fool. We are running a number of combos that can and will end the game in our favor.

Spike Feeder is an integral part of our strategy. We run both Heliod, Sun-Crowned & Archangel of Thune, gaining us unlimited life. (and giant creatures, in the angel's case). We will also run Walking Ballista alongside heliod, should our spikes not be enough.

Unspeakable Symbol + Spike Feeder + any Hardened Scales effect gives us infinite life

Cryptic Trilobite + Cathars' Crusade + Together Forever gives us infinite mana for our abilities, granted we need one mana to get the combo started. Similarly, Cryptic Trilobite + The Great Henge + Together Forever also grants us infinite card draw.

Crystalline Crawler + any spike + either two Hardened Scales effects, or one and Heartstone also gives us infinite mana

Infinite mana + any Hardened Scales effect + any spike gives us infinite power and toughness, infinite damage with Walking Ballista, infinite card draw with Generous Patron

Any many more, because we have countless synergies at any moment, and the potential with spikes is limitless. There's combos here that I probably don't even recognize, and I encourage you to make your own! In order to help us hit our combos, we're running Eladamri's Call, Shared Summons, and Wishclaw Talisman

Even without our combos, we have enough synergies and fast mana to build a creature up fast, and it won't be long until your opponent is staring down the grisly barrel of a slug they laughed at on turn three. This deck is designed to make your opponent dismiss you, win out of nowhere, accrue value, and have a good time with arguably one of Magic's most underrated creature types!
