Daxos of Meletis

I recently got a chance to test out the new build of this deck, and although it plays far better than before; it is still pretty tough against a table of people.

A lot of the decks I build are thematic and have quirky wincons. I wanted to build a deck that actual takes commander damage into account, but not a straight bash one. I got Tundra in a collection of cards I bought, I started looking at commanders. I loved Daxos and his ability to get to cast spells out of your deck.

My first build of Daxos was all wienies that couldn’t be blocked; I focused on unblockable, horsemanship, and shadow as keywords, however I quickly realized I could not deal with 3-4 players before being overrun by all the huge creatures my playgroup tends to use. I didn’t simply want huge creatures of my own, so I opted for a pillowfort subtheme with the help of Fog Bank and Seraph of the Sword, and supplementing it with stuff like Path to Exile and Reality Shift.

Heroes

  • Sword of Feast and Famine – Although a hero in just about any deck, when equipped to Daxos it allows me to cast out of my hand before combat and then off of my opponents deck after combat.
  • Lantern of Insight – with 3-4 opponents, this allows me alter my attacks with Daxos to get a great spell, or simply stop my opponent from having access to it.
  • Fireshrieker – this deck has quite a few “when deals combat damage” effects. Getting 2 from every attack is almost better than the damage that is dealt.
  • Any cipher card – putting a ciphering card onto my unblockable creatures means that every turn I get to cast them for free. At the very least, I get to cast them before combat, then once more when the creature hits during combat of the same turn.

I am open to suggestions and welcome input.

My Reasons for each card

Augury Adept - Works for both card draw and life gain. Does need a Cloak to really be effective

Cephalid Constable - If he comes out early enough, he can shut a player down, especially if Cloaked or boosted

Cephalid Facetaker - I have yet to see her in action, but my friends play with many different on attack effects. So thought this might be a fun way to take advantage of that.

Deep-Sea Kraken - With 3-4 opponents, this kraken can see play within 1 revolution of the table.

Ferropede - Can be used to removing counters from X creatures, as well as planeswalkers or my own suspended Kraken

Fog Bank - This deck sort of pillowforts while it hits my opponents with unblockable creatures, Fog Bank is one of the best for this.

Guard Gomazoa - Another pillowfort creature, not as good as the Fog Bank but works to stop a big creature.

Intrepid Hero - In my opinion, this is a better version of a Royal Assassin

K-9, Mark I - Brand new addition to the is deck. I am not sure if it will help, but has a Rogue's Passage for my commander.

Lighthouse Chronologist - I have yet to have this guy fire. Either I get him too early in the game to be able to afford the 7 extra mana needed, or I get him later in the game and he is blasted the moment he enters.

Lu Xun, Scholar General - Basically unblockable, cause let’s face it people don’t play Horsemanship. Great for card draw as well.

Padeem, Consul of Innovation - Although I don’t generally get to appreciate the card draw from him, keeping my artifacts safe from destruction is usually enough

Phantom Warrior - The OG unblockable creature.

Sea-Dasher Octopus - really only here for the mutate-onto-another-creature option. May end up getting replaced.

Selfless Squire - Basically a White Fog effect.

Seraph of the Sword - A white version of a Fog Bank

Slippery Scoundrel - Just an extra unblockable creature, may end up getting replaced with something with more oomph.

Sun Titan - I currently have 15 creatures that cost 3 or less, as well as most of my artifacts and enchantments. Also works to return a Terramorphic Expanse or Evolving Wilds to the battlefield if I still need mana

Thassa, God of the Sea - The scry is nice late game to curate my draw. and the ability to give someone unblockable is also nice.

Thistledown Liege - Great to make my commander a real threat. Also great for Augury Adept

True-Name Nemesis - The ultimate unblockable creature. Usually no other player but the one I name cares to stop him.

Hidden Strings - With all the unblockable creatures, I can almost always guarantee that this will be ciphered onto a creature that can recast it each combat

Last Thoughts - Cipher is great in this deck. This acts as an extra card every turn if put on a small unblockable creature.

Multiple Choice - I am not sure about this card. It can be a bunch of things, and i replaced out Stolen Identity and not sure if that was a good choice.

Portent - Just a small cantrip to help Daxos out. And it replaces itself in my hand.

Wrath of God - Never hurts to have one around… just in case

Arcane Lighthouse - A staple land. Great to deal with hexproofed beasts along with a Darksteel Mutation or Reality Shift

Command Tower - Its a Command Tower, seems like a no brainer.

Detection Tower - Works to sneak a Path to Exile or Swords to Plowshares through

Eiganjo Castle - Works to keep my commander alive if there are shenanigans.

Glacial Fortress - Dual land that almost always enters untapped

Mystic Gate - Mana Fixing

Opal Palace - I don’t usually use this land in my decks, but this is one of my few decks where commander damage is an option.

Prairie Stream - Dual land that almost always enters untapped

Reliquary Tower - I have tried to ramp up card draw in this deck. And if I am always spending mana to cast my opponents spells, I would prefer not to have to discard.

Rogue's Passage - a great way to sneak a Augury Adept or a Sun Titan through

Sea of Clouds - Because we generally play 4-5 players this almost always enters untapped.

Tundra - The card itself is in very rough shape, and not worth the value that TCG assigns it. But it works to play and is great to see in any hand

Akroma's Memorial - I have yet to see true benefit from this, either its too expensive for me to afford, or when it enters it gets wiped by a board wipe or a disk

Arcane Signet - Auto-add to pretty much every deck

Azorius Signet - Great manarock, can be played on turn 2

Basilisk Collar - This is a great piece of equipment, it works toward my secondary theme of life gain in this deck.

Bident of Thassa - With all the unblockable creatures in this deck, the additional card draw I can get off this is great.

Dowsing Dagger   - I generally get to flip this to Lost Vale   on my first attack because I attach it to an unblockable creature

Fireshrieker - Double strike works great for my commander as well as Lu Xun, the Constable, the Adept, or the titans; Sun or Frost

Lantern of Insight - This allows me to know who to attack with my commander, even if I can’t cast it, getting rid of a potential threat and gaining life of a big card is nice

Lightning Greaves - There are a few creatures in this deck that when out I want to be able to protect, I also wouldn’t want anyone to be able to copy my unblockables and start attacking me with them.

Masterwork of Ingenuity - I have used this to copy both my Sword as well as my Dagger

Mishra's Bauble - Just a small way to see who I should attack with Daxos. And replaces itself in my hand when used.

Neurok Stealthsuit - The ability to switch who is wearing this equipment at instant speed is great.

Quietus Spike - With all the unblockable creatures in this deck this one was a no brainer.

Sculpting Steel - Because of the high artifact count in this deck, having the ability to copy a key piece of equipment is great, or even an opponent's Metamorph

Sol Ring - umm, it’s a Sol Ring

Swiftfoot Boots - There are a few creatures in this deck that when out I want to be able to protect, I also wouldn’t want anyone to be able to copy my unblockables and start attacking me with them.

Sword of Feast and Famine - When equipped to Daxos or the Adept I can cast a spell before combat and still be able to cast the spells I get from them after combat.

Sword of the Animist - Unblockable creatures and a mana hungry commander. I dont know why it took me so long to add this card.

Whispersilk Cloak - I have a few creatures in this deck that aren't unblockable, which the cloak helps with. But mostly the shroud is the main use for this equipment.

Counterspell - Counters anything and only costs 2 mana.

Disallow - One of my favorite counterspells. so versatile

Path to Exile - One mana exile

Reality Shift - Helps deal with indestructible creatures like Avacyn or any God or Eldrazi

Render Silent - If cast on the first spell an opponent casts on his turn, is not only a counter spell, but also acts as a Silence for the remainder of his turn

Return to Dust - The versatility to be able to remove an artifact or an enchantment is fantastic, and getting to do it twice if cast on my turn, for 4 mana, that’s a great bargain

Shadow Rift - Just a small unblockable cantrip. Replaces itself in my hand.

Silence - When cast on a players untap step, it essentially means they don’t get to cast anything that turn. Can also be used to shut down any shenanigans on a crucial attack

Swords to Plowshares - One mana exile

Combat Research - I have tried adding more draw to this deck and this gives the added benefit of ward 1

Curious Obsession - Along the same lines as Combat Research. I haven't yet seen this card in play, so dont know if the sacrifice clause will come back to bite me or not

Eldrazi Conscription - On an unblockable creature, this enchantment becomes a game winner

Idolized - I am hopeful that this card with work out well, is new with Fallout, so have not seen it yet.

Rhystic Study - A staple for any blue deck. Card draw, even if it means discarding down to 7 at the end of my turn is never a bad thing

Staggering Insight - Slightly worse than Combat Research, but slightly better than Curious Obsession

Steel of the Godhead - This belongs on Augury Adept but usually ends up on Daxos

Unquestioned Authority - Higher CMC than either Combat Research or Curious Obsession, but essential gives unblockable as well. Should replace itself the turn I play it

Suggestions

Updates Add

I made three pretty solid replacements..

Guile replaces Tidal Kraken - Same power and toughness but 2 less casting cost. The unblockable of the Kraken is nice, but getting Guile out sooner is pretty nice.

Sea of Clouds replaces Coastal Tower - A pretty great replacement. Same land, but chances are will come in untapped, as we almost always play 4-5 player games.

Dowsing Dagger  Flip replaces Armory of Iroas - Thinking i may need to use the land more than i use the equipment, and getting a creature through for damage shouldnt be tough in this deck.
