Currently, I'm thinking about taking out Thousand-Year Storm to bring down the cost of the deck. Thousand-Year Storm can lead to some insanely explosive turns, but the deck doesn't have a mana curve low enough to utilize it very consistently in my opinion. I'm thinking about swapping it out for Curious Homunculus  , Magma Jet , Jori En, Ruin Diver , Glint-Horn Buccaneer , Ral, Storm Conduit , Time Reversal , or Mindmoil . Lots to choose from, which is where I'm confusing myself on what would be best.

What do you think I should swap Thousand-Year Storm out for, should I swap out a different card, or should I just leave the deck be as is? All comments, insights, and (constructive) criticisms are appreciated!

My version of a budget Niv-Mizzet deck. Commander can be either Niv-Mizzet, Parun ; Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind ; or Melek, Izzet Paragon . However, I recommend using either of the Niv-Mizzets though because Melek is not a win condition on his own.

This deck is based off of/inspired by The Commander's Quarters budget Niv-Mizzet, Parun deck.

The Maybeboard contains potential swaps and reasonable, but not extremely expensive, upgrades for the deck. If you are upgrading the deck though, I'd recommend swapping out Corrupted Grafstone and Guardian Idol for a mana rock of your choice and Sol Ring first.

Update: I've moved the Maybeboard into the description to reduce visual clutter.

  • Basilisk Collar can either be an addition to the Gorgon equipment mentioned above, or replace one of them. If you're replacing one, I'd recommend replacing Gorgon Flail because Basilisk Collar is one cmc cheaper, and we're using these for deathtouch, not the +1/+1 counter.

  • Grafted Exoskeleton is an additional source of infect. Same as corrupted conscience above except you can't steal a creature with it.

  • Niv-Mizzet, Parun / Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind + Silverclad Ferocidons . Ping your own Silverclad ferocidons to force your opponents to sacrifice up to 4 permanents each turn! Or just use it as an really annoying blocker, that works too.

  • The usual Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal . Infinite mana if you have enough mana rocks out. Not to mention this also gives you an infinite storm counter on Thousand-Year Storm !

  • Elite Arcanist can either be a replacement for Isochron Scepter, or do combos of its own since there is no cmc restriction! One such combo is Elite Arcanist + Turnabout . This can either be a high utility combo, allowing you to tap/untap either your opponents or your creatures, artifacts, or lands. But, if you have Thousand-Year Storm out, you can go infinite. Or again, you could just be mean and instantly tap all of one of your opponent's lands as soon as they become untapped and essentially skip their turn. There is a lot that Elite Arcanist can do, so long as you pair it with the correct INSTANT spell. Just remember that you have to wait one turn cycle to use him, or give him haste somehow, such as with Lightning Greaves .

  • Laboratory Maniac / Jace, Wielder of Mysteries . We're drawing a lot of cards in this deck. Want self mill as an alternate win condition? Here you go. I'd swap these in if you feel like you're decking yourself too often, or if you're afraid of decking yourself with how many wheel effects are present. Alternately, you can put in a Echo of Eons which is a Reset Wheel with flashback so if you happen to send it to your graveyard, you have a bit of insurance that you won't deck yourself.

  • Ral, Storm Conduit + A cheap instant/sorcery ex: Opt + Any two copy spells ex Twincast , Reverberate , Expansion / Explosion . Cast the cheap spell. Cast a copy spell targeting the cheap spell. Cast another copy spell targeting the ORIGINAL copy spell. Once the new copy of the original copy spell goes onto the stack, use this to copy the original copy spell and repeat. This creates an infinite loop of copied spells on the stack, except they do nothing because they're just copy spells, not anything that actually affects the board. HOWEVER, Ral, Storm Conduit does damage for each time you copy a spell, thus creating an infinite damage combo (which can only target planeswalkers and players).

If you believe that the deck can be made better while still maintaining a reasonable $50 budget, or even lowering the budget while maintaining quality, please leave a comment below! I'd be glad to hear what insights you might offer.

+1 Jace, Wielder of Mysteries

-1 Ral, Storm Conduit

Even though Ral was useful in copying wheel effects or maybe an Aether Gale to bounce more stuff, wheeling so much felt a bit dangerous so I swapped him for Jace, Wielder of Mysteries as an alternate win condition if needed. I would prefer to use Echo of Eons because it has flashback and is much safer, but it's about ~$7 and would bring the price of the deck up.

+1 Neurok Stealthsuit

-1 Rewind

Niv gets targeted a lot due to his power, and it sucks to have a UUURRR creature die instantly to removal and then have to pay 2UUURRR next time. I swapped Rewind for Neurok Stealthsuit . Neurok Stealthsuit gives the equipped creature shroud, preventing it from being targeted (by anyone, including us). It can also be equipped at instant speed for UU, which helps protect other creatures as well. I took out Rewind for this because it can be hard to leave 4 mana open solely for a counterspell, and this helps protect our commander, one of the things that counterspell would have done anyways. I swapped Rewind instead of Insidious Will because Insidious Will also has other modes to choose from which gives much more utility and use cases.
