Hollow One is Here to Stay —April 10, 2018

I went 0-3 this past week. Losing Round one to BW Tokens, Round two to Hollow One, and Three to Mono White Taxes after a grueling game three. I noticed a weakness in my list and it was 2 Lingering Soulsfoil. I had no good answers to Hollow One outside of Kolaghan's Command or Maelstrom Pulse. I decided that Scavenging Oozefoil would be better to exile Bloodghast and Flamewake Phoenix. I swapped out some cards in the SB for Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet amd Rakdos Charm. I added a single copy of Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip to spice up the list and get some added value against removal spells.

Amazing deck but card explanation needs work, you don't say anything on Lingering Souls and some cards like Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet aren't in the deck anymore. As for sideboard, some cards are just bad like Scarab Feast which only exiles three cards for a whole mana! If you play it for the cycling sometimes to draw a card, I would recommend Relic of Progenitus or to save mana maybe Tormod's Crypt. Another one is Victim of Night, in which terminate is just so much better, AND you don't need the double black. But great deck +1!

darklord1135 I think you mistook the sideboard for the maybeboard, buddy. Look again...

darklord1135 thanks for pointing out the Lingering Souls bit. Scarab Feast was a card I was curious about if it would translate into modern as cheap instant speed graveyard hate. DarkStarStorm is right about those cards being in the maybe board. I keep cards in the maybe board as cards in my toolbox depending on the meta. I will see if I can update the card explanations tomorrow. Ive been meaning to do a full update on the primer section but havent gotten around to it.
As for Relic of Progenitus, Im not sure how I feel about it. Although it can be good against a delirium deck. It may do well against the mirror. Ill have to test that.

In general, Nihil Spellbomb is better than Relic for decks with access to black. Leaving your own graveyard for Goyf is a huge plus.

But frankly I don't think Nihil Spellbomb isn't strong enough when you need it. If you want to hate on something like Hollow One, then you need the likes of Leyline of the Void or Rest in Peace since you have white.

Also I totally took your idea of Lingering Souls in a non-white deck and put it into my Grixis Delver deck. Now I board into Lingering Souls vs Control and Midrange. So thanks for the idea! It's some sweet tech.

Thats awesome. Im hesitant to bring in Leyline of the Void in jund because of Bob triggers. Its more for mono black. Scavenging Ooze works well enough with Nihil Spellbomb as a security blanket.

25 lands is probably too many. maybe cut it down to 24. i'd also probably up the creature count to 16. if less than 1/4 of your deck is creatures, then on average you'd need to see 12 cards from your deck before you saw a 3rd creature, which puts you at turn 6 if you're on the play. i also think it'd help if instead of running 1 or 2 of so much stuff, you picked the best ones and ran 4. some of your mainboard cards could be moved to the sideboard as they are more situational.

Thanks for checking out the deck buckeyetron. The deck runs 25 lands for 2 reasons. Number one is hitting a land drop on every turn is crucial for getting a T4 Bloodbraid Elf. Secondly, by running 5 manlands, 3 Raging Ravine and 2 Treetop Village, the deck needs a lot of mana to fuel the activation cost. If the deck ever goes back to running 2-3 manlands, 24 lands would probably suffice.

The removal suite in this deck is very flexible and debatable and is very meta dependent. Fatal Push/Terminate favors Humans and general aggro. Abrupt Decay is more for control and Affinity or Lantern. Lightning Bolt is a general catch-all and is the best of the three to hit off Bloodbraid Elf as there is always a target.

Thoughtseize is run as a one of simply to avoid over shocking ourselves however it is often a vital tool against big mana decks and control. I could see going up to 2 copies and cutting one Inquisition of Kozilek. A one of Maelstrom Pulse is a catch-all that is sometimes the only answer for general enchantment and planeswalker removal. Kolaghan's Command is a great utility card that 99% of the time has 2 relevant modes. Some decks run 1 Kolaghan's Command MB/1 SB and 2 Maelstrom Pulse MB. This again is driven by the meta.

The only card I could see potentially being too situational would be Liliana, the Last Hope but with the meta being as aggressive as it is right now, I prefer to have one MB and one additional SB for humans.

I hope that helps some. Please let me know what SPECIFIC examples you have if you disagree with any of the above statements. The deck really runs well and has a sort of toolbox-y feel to it at times. You often have to decide whether to "Bolt the Bird" / "Push the Bird" / "Decay the Bird" and choosing the correct one can determine the outcome of the game.

Also, with regards to the creature count. Typically there would be an additional Scavenging Ooze and either Tireless Tracker or Kitchen Finks. But because I'm running Lingering Souls, I'm only running 2 copies of Scooze. If I ever cut the Lingering Souls I would run a third Scavenging Ooze and Kitchen Finks. That or a second Maelstrom Pulse.

how often do you get stuck with souls in your hand and no way to cast it or discard it?

Once in a while scrotality. Ive played Inquisition of Kozilek targeting myself once so far just to get Lingering Souls in the yard.
