Modern Constructed (3-1) —March 20, 2018

I went 3-1 the other night at my LGS. Deck ran pretty good. Lingering Soulsfoil was excellent against every matchup. Manlands are here to stay as Treetop Villagefoil helped to close out more than one game. I have since cut Godless Shrinefoil for Mountainfoil and 1 Scavenging Oozefoil for a Liliana, the Last Hope MB. Let me delve into the matches and go over how the night went.

Round 1: Eldrazi Tron on the Draw (2-1)
Game 1: Won
T1 Tron land/Raging Ravine.
T2 Chalice of the Void on 1/Bob.
T3 Matter Reshaper/Kolaghan's Command blowing up Chalice and Matter Reshaper.
Following turns went double 5/6 Goyf taking him from 20 to 10 and then 10 to 0.
Game 2: Lost
He hit natural tron on turn 3. I was able to Fulminator Mage him but he bounced back and played Karn Liberated which I had Maelstrom Pulse for. He won as I flooded out.
Game 3: Won
He had bad mana and hit 3 power plants and one tower which I BBE into Fulminator and blew it up. From there he got stuck on mana and we Jund em out.

Felt good to win Round one against a Tron variant.

Round 2: Abzan Druid Combo on the Play (1-2)
Game 1: Won
Grindy match-up overall. I hit him with 3 discard spells in a row. He had a decent board state with Devoted Druid, Kitchen Finks and a Bird. I had two Bobs in play and wound up having to edict one with my own LotV to preserve my life total. Treetop Villagefoil eventually got in with BBE to end the match.
Game 2: Lost
Not much here, he comboed off T5 and used Duskwatch Recruiter  Flip to dig for Walking Ballista for infinite damage.
Game 3: Lost
An early Tidehollow Sculler and Noble Hierarch got the K-Command special putting them both in the bin. However, a T5 Whisperwood Elemental was out of reach for everything but Maelstrom Pulse or Terminate which I didn't find.

This match-up is often troublesome and gets really grindy if they don't combo off. An aggro approach is better here since they are typically light on removal save Path to Exile.

Round 3: Jeskai Control on the Draw (2-0)
Game 1: Won
Opponent kept a no lander with a bunch of 1 drops but failed to draw a land and scooped after 3 dead draws.
Game 2: Won
I hit him with 3 discard spells in a row. He resolved a T4 Jace, the Mind Sculptor which got Pulsed immidiately. Lingering Souls worked great here and allowed me to block Celestial Colonnade saving LotV. Manlands + BBE = Jund em out

This match-up isn't all that bad. T1 discard is key here to know how to play around their counter magic. Overall the deck just gets stomped by Bloodbraid Jund.

Round 4: Jeskai Control on the Play (2-0)
Game 1: Won
A lot of back and forth attrition and countering. Eventually won out with Treetop Villagefoil and Raging Ravine.
Game 2: Won
Jace, the Mind Sculptor is bad. He was able to Supreme Verdict a Bob and Goyf. I followed with Lingering Souls plus flashback. Treetop Villagefoil, Raging Ravine and 1/1 spirits got em dead.

My opponent didn't bring in Runed Halo, which I think is a mistake. The manlands were key in closing out this match-up and being able to negate the damage from either one of the manlands could have helped. Even though I didn't ultimate LotV against him it could protect against that as well.

Sorry man. Been real busy lately. How's the list treating you? Seen you made some major changes to the list overall since last time

Thanks for checking in. I have made some BIG changes. I've splashed for Lingering Souls and it has been doing pretty good. I plan on taking it to my LGS tonight. I'm still toying with a couple ideas but I think this list is what I'm going to run for a couple weeks. I might drop one Kolaghan's Command for a second Maelstrom Pulse. I also haven't decided if I want to run Mountain or keep it at 24. I flood out often enough that I don't like the thought of 25 lands. But Lingering Souls has been a really nice addition. Also cutting Bloodbraid Elf down to 3 seems right for the build I'm running.

I like the splash for Lingering Souls. In what matchups have you found the most success with it?

Lingering Souls is great as a discard with Liliana of the Veil. It really helps stabilize and lets me swing with Tarmogoyf and leave up blockers. Forcing blocks or getting in for damage. Against Mirror matches it gives a nice upper hand. Also, against aggro decks it lets me flood the board with creatures easily. Its not uncommon to have goyf, bob, bbe, and two spirit tokens in play.

I get why it's good, but what I'm wondering is what matchups have YOU found where it scored a homerun. Basically, what in your meta is it good against (specific decks).
