Arcum Dagsson EDH

Commander / EDH Mono-Blue

CanEx

So, Paradox Engine got banned. Clearly Arcum is worse for it, but is he unplayable?

Considering that I still have and enjoy this deck, the answer should be obvious. Arcum remains both a very strong Stax commander as well as a combo deck that thrives under stax pieces. His versatility keeps him viable as well as very fun.

OVERVIEW

Though Arcum's speed of winning has changed, his endgame has not. Your first combo activation (and, depending on the table, first activation overall) should get Rings of Brighthearth. During your next turn, you can then use Arcum with Rings to fetch out Basalt Monolith and Staff of Domination. Generate infinite mana with Rings and Monolith to draw your deck with the Staff before you cast Walking Ballista and proceed to kill the table.

The main trick with Arcum now is judging whether or not you should proceed to win the game or establish a lock. Given your table Trinisphere, God-Pharaoh's Statue, or Possessed Portal might be the right card to fetch with Arcum before you start winning.

NOTABLE ADDS

God-Pharaoh's Gift is an exciting new add that not only lets us reuse sacrificed artifact creatures to keep feeding Arcum, but also lets us recast Arcum once whenever he dies AND gives him haste. If your meta is Removal Heavy or the battlefield is full of hate pieces, this is a very strong early target to get.

Dramatic Reversal is normally for storm decks, but here it's particularly versatile. Not only does it allow you to combo off in response to someone killing Arcum, but we can also tutor up Isochron Scepter with our commander. Scepter is even pretty good on its own, allowing us to either counter a spell each turn cycle or filter with Brainstorm.

Dark Depths might seem unusual in this list, but it has two things going for it. First, we can tutor both Mirage Mirror and Expedition Map with Arcum, so there is little opportunity cost in running it. Further, we can recur both pieces with Academy Ruins and Crucible of Worlds. Crucible also allows us to recur Thespian's Stage for more Marit Lages.
