Maybeboard

I know this deck is more than likely too slow for Modern (unfortunately, Manabarbs is not legal in Pioneer), but I enjoyed this combo so much I wanted to see if I could pull it off and this is still a work in progress. That being said, the goal is to set up Manabarbs and/or Fires of Invention as early as possible and punish your opponent for playing magic, while clearing the field and establishing the mid-game. Works even better when your opponent over extends.

Main Combo

  • Manabarbs: Punish your opponents while cheating your spells out or taking minimal damage to take over the game. Plus it gets really aggressive when you can set up multiple copies.

  • Fires of Invention - Cheat your spells out. Most of the spells in this deck cost four and below to set up plays for this.

Ramp

Try to play Either Manabarbs or Fires of Invention on turn three (too bad Simian Spirit Guide and Rite of Flame are no longer legal)

Board Wipe

  • Hour of Devastation: Takes care of most of the field including cheap early planeswalkers. Only gets awkward when they are playing a Nicol Bolas planeswalker, but that's why I've only included two. Setting up an early Manabarbs should also work as a deterrent for Nicol Bolas as they are usually not cheap to cast.

  • Burn Down the House: Clears the field or stalls when necessary.

  • Storm's Wrath: Does everything we need it to do in this category at an efficient cost.

Utility (While making your opponent crawl through Manabarbs)

Misc

  • Magmatic Insight - For just a little more draw power. This deck only needs about 5 lands to operate, and that's where this comes in. The cheap casting cost also makes sure we take the least amount of damage from Manabarbs

Sideboard

  • Chandra, Torch of Defiance: Similar function to Chandra, Fire Artisan, but with more options, so these two are pretty interchangeable. Chandra, Fire Artisan is in the main deck because she does more damage in a shorter amount of time.

  • Damping Sphere: To slow down Affinity, Urzatron, Jund, or any other really quick aggro deck. There's probably better options that don't slow us down a little too, but should buy us enough time to wipe the board and enact our game plan.

  • Lightning Mare: Anti-Blue and counter strategy.

  • Blasphemous Act: Anti-Token/Elf Strategy.

  • Everlasting Torment: Anti-life gain strategies.

  • Solar Blaze: A little underappreciated and usually gets the job done. Might change this out for Storm's Wrath since it can leave some of our ramp alive when the dust settles. Also, as a bonus it is pretty funny with Repercussion if you don't want to keep this in modern.

Bonus Potential for Gideon Tribal

And that's it for now. Any constructive criticism or suggestions would be greatly appreciated =).

Updates Add

Considering replacing the one or all of the Gideon's with Oketra's Last Mercy to pull ahead after setting up Manabarbs. Trying to see if the lifegain offsets the protection the Gideons provide. Also tested out Maestros Charm for the flexibility. Not worth the effort it took to cast it without Fires of Invention out.
