Welcome to Nature Strikes Back !

You are looking at a Selesnya token-army and lifegain deck. Its commander, Rhys the Redeemed, is a 1/1 legendary Elf Warrior with '2, Tap: Create a 1/1 green and white Elf Warrior creature token. 4 , Tap: For each creature token you control, create a token that's a copy of that creature.’.

It is fun to command a swarm of relatively innocent looking creatures; especially against the colours of magic that love screwing around with nature. After all, blue mages mess up the fabric of space and time, thereby distorting the natural world. Red mages tend to annihilate living things with raw energy, causing entropy and chaos wherever they go. Black mages snuff the life out of nature and turn what is left into husks purely animated by unnatural energies. This deck is meant to oppose such forces with a vengeance, and make them pay for their callous rampaging. We greatly appreciate feedback to any of our decks, including this one. Before you give any however, please take note of the following:

  1. Having fun at MTG, is more important to us than winning games. We want our opponents to have a fun time playing against us too. That makes it more likely people will want to play against us again. This attitude is reflected in the way in which we build decks. They do not need to be invincible; not even competitive. We are ok with decks containing infinite combos though, as they can produce some hilarious results. So well done if you can pull one off; especially if it is original.
  2. We no longer buy cards, but in cases that we feel a card really adds to our collection, we still trade them. This means that whenever you are suggesting a card we do not own, chances are slim it is going to end up in our deck. Please do not take this personally. Also, please do not let this stop you from making suggestions. Suggestions that do not make it into this deck, will still be mentioned on this page and might be used by others.
  3. Please do not forget to include the card(s) you would remove to make room for your recommended card(s).
  4. Please do not recommend any cards with infect or cards whose sole purpose is to destroy basic lands (non-basic lands are fair game). Our playgroup has banned them.

With that being said, thank you for all your support and if you should decide to use our ideas, have lots of fun with them.

This deck seeks to overwhelm our opponents by attacking with many (small) creature-tokens. Rhys the Redeemed plays an instrumental role in this strategy, as she is able to create tokens or even double the amount of tokens instantly. Aside from generating these many creatures to attack our opponents with, we are using the getting of creatures on the battlefield as triggers for other things like gaining life, drawing cards, destroying permanents or boosting our own permanents.

Generally, we try to start a game by getting some ramp on the field. Some of our favorite options are cards like Land Tax, Exploration, Mana Vault and Sol Ring. During the early stage of a game, we also try to either get some filters on the field like Scroll Rack, as these can help us get to the cards we need quicker. Cheap-to-cast cards that can provide life, like Soul Warden, Soul's Attendant and Essence Warden, are of tertiary importance during this phase.

After the first few turns, priority is given to summoning creatures and using instants/sorceries/enchantments to create creature-tokens. Some cheap-to-use examples that we really enjoy are Brimaz, King of Oreskos, Kazandu Tuskcaller, Imperious Perfect, Voice of Resurgence and White Sun's Zenith.

In order to give the usage of these creatures an even higher impact, we'll try to also use spells that can generate even more creatures (like Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives and Doubling Season) and/or get some cards that profit lots from having as many creatures entering the BF as possible (like Champion of Lambholt, Cryptolith Rite, Aura Shards, Glare of Subdual, Harvest Season and Slate of Ancestry).

The end-game is defined by amassing a massive token army and overrunning everyone else's side of the battlefield.

  • Beast Whisperer; we prefer using draw cards that depend on creatures appearing in other ways OR on creature-presence on the board. Whisperer has us depending on summoning, which is less advantageous for us in this deck.
  • Finale of Devastation; we do not have one yet but it would definitely be fun in this deck; we will include this card if we can find some crazy person to trade for this card with us.
  • Finale of Glory; obviously we can appreciate the benefits of this card. However, it is not really ‘nature’-themed, which is what we were looking for in this deck. We’ve excluded other great token (interaction) cards for similar reasons.
  • Intangible Virtue; was recently removed from our deck’s mainboard to make room for more card-draw; but depending on the decks our play-group is using we might occasionally slip this back into the mainboard.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth/Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite; these are fun but we’ve used these cards in many of our decks and we figured this time we would buff our stuff in other ways. But obviously, they would be good in a token deck (though a bit expensive to cast).
