Maybeboard

Welcome to my take on the commander 2017 tribal decks. I bought the dragon deck in an instant. I used to have a white / green dragon deck and as I love the big beasts and I wanted to run a 5 colour dragon deck as the white / green one was very one sided. This deck is all about dragons, dragons and dragons. No surprise there but I tried to make a list that can hold it's own in a casual meta. I tried to keep the list simple and let the dragons shine in this deck. But to do that I had to consider a few things.

landbase and ramp

Five colors is really hard to pull off and with so many red cards it was kind of a struggle to figure it out. The landbase can be quiet expensive and I don't want to spend the money on those cards, so fetchlands are out of the question since I don't own any of them. I did add the BFZ dual lands with basic land types (they can be tutored with Krosan Verge) and a few checklands that can tap for red alongside another color. For the same reason I added some tri-color lands that tap for red and some snow duals that can be fetched. It is a little slow, but it works for me most of the time. I kept most of the ramp spells that were in the deck. I added Pir's Whim because it can net me The World Tree and Into the North as there are some snow duals in te deck. I furthermore added a few mana rocks and topped it of with a few cost reducers like Rivaz of the Claw, Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma and Morophon, the Boundless, Herald's Horn and the commander reduce the cost of dragon spells. Lastly there are Ramos, Dragon Engine and Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient are some cool dragons that can generate a ton of mana. Al in all it is a pretty extensive ramp package and I think that is needed with a deck high mana value. Maybe there I need to make some little changes and put in another land ramp spell in favor of a mana rock. I didn't put Urza's Incubator in the deck. It's a meta call. There are far to many players in my play group that also run dragons and I experienced a few blowouts where they had far more advantage than I did.

removal

Removal was also a struggle to figure out for this deck. To stay within the theme I first looked at some dragons that have removal stapled on them. There where a few in the precon, but I found them to be sub-optimal choices. Luckily Balefire Dragon was reprinted this year (wow...i run this deck for a long time) and I grabbed one as soon as I saw that. Drakuseth, Maw of Flames can also deal out some damage as can Terror of the Peaks and Scourge of Valkas. Scalelord Reckoner can deal with anything in theory, but it is a bit situational. I also added a few more commonly used spells to deal with other permanents like Generous Gift, Anguished Unmaking and the newest Tear Asunder. I added Crib Swap as an added exile effect that fits the tribal theme. For mass removal I added Deathbringer Regent as it's a boardwipe stapled on a dragon. I kept Crux of Fate and added Cyclonic Rift because I am in blue. I added Klauth's Will as a mass removal spell for artifacts and enchantments. It may not be the best (wear//tear or heliods intervention maybe are better) but there is some extra utility + it is a bit more on theme.

card draw

Another mandatory category in any deck is the ability to draw cards. I added kept and added tribal synergies like Kindred Discovery and Vanquisher's Banner. I then further added a ton of card draw I thought synergizes great with the deck as a whole. Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner, Garruk's Uprising and Temur Ascendancy go very well with the go tall strategy. I also tried Sarkhan Unbroken but he ended up as a 5 mana ramp and draw spell that got killed very quick. Kiora is cheaper and can do both just as good. Return of the Wildspeaker can double up and also act as a finisher. Stinging Study draws me 9 cards....9!!! It has been absolutly amazing in this deck!! Lastly I added Pact of the Serpent. Cheap and with a few dragons on the board can reflll my hand easily. Lastly I added some dragons that draw cards like Two-Headed Hellkite and Zurgo and Ojutai as dragons that draw me a card. With the commander also drawing this deck can keep a full hand most of the time.

give em haste

If I want to attack fast, haste is very important. You don't want your dragons to sit there for a whole turn only to be removed or you have to sac them because someone like to play Sheoldred (and who wouldn't do that in black). So....haste. Dragonlord Kolaghan and Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund are dragons that gives haste. Temur Ascendancy gives me haste and draws me cards. Dragon Tempest gives haste and can deal a bit of damage while being on the board. With a dozen dragons that have haste, Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves chances are very good my dragons can attack the turn they are dropped.

protection from boardwipes

This deck had one major weakness and that was boardwipes. As soon as 1 of 2 dragon's hit the field people tend to wipe the board or kill the one dragon attacking them. They are right to do so, because taking damage from 2 dragons each turn adds up very quick. Mostly in the late game I have to protect my board as best as I can. I therefore added Heroic Intervention. It is the best there....just run it...you will never be dissapointed. I also added Cosmic Intervention. This cute little card brings back every permanent put into the graveyard that turn and is an upgrade to Faith's Reward. While mostly there to bring back the dragons, it can't hurt this card protect me from non-land board wipes as they are more commonly used these days.

This deck wins by beating the hell out of my opponents with dragons. Finishers to make that goal happen are Atarka, World Render and the new Thrakkus the Butcher and blast-furnace dragon It simple, fun and sometime hilarious to see how much damage this deck can dish out. Sure there are times the mana base is just to slow, I don't draw a haste card or got beaten up by decks that are way faster, but I don't care. It is perfect for a night where you want to play a relaxed game of commander while talking to your friends as this deck isn't very complicated to pilot.

Updates Add

I switched out Elemental Bond for Vanquisher's Banner. Besides the card draw, it gives my creatures a bit of a boost.
