Kwain, Itinerant Miller

This casual, toolbox-type deck ventures to defeat your opponents in the most fun way possible, MILL! But this is a different type of mill, attempting to get opponents to draw themselves to death. With this deck, opponents seem tolerant of the milling process, as it adds consistency to their plays. Very rarely will anyone miss land drops or not have playable actions on their turns. This all leads to explosive, fun, and memorable moments for all players. It's surprising how well the deck can compete with fairly powerful decks, since most players tend to view you favorably. The main goal is making sure you have the resources to cast Kwain on turn 1 or turn 2. If you can accomplish that, everything else seems to fall into place. Aggressive mulligans are worth it in this case.

The deck packs a fair suite of removal and soft control to help keep you in the fight. It can struggle against go-wide and graveyard strategies, but does have ways to deal with them. There's an infinite combo involving an untapping strategy that can work really well. It isn't too difficult to pull off because of the included tutors for the different pieces.

Infinite Mill/Draw Combo: Aphetto Alchemist or Tidewater Minion + Illusionist's Bracers + a draw/mill tapper = infinite mill or draw

  • Equip Illusionist's bracers to Alchemist or Minion.
  • Tap the mill/draw tapper.
  • Tap Alchemist/Minion and copy its ability, targeting itself with the copied untap ability.
  • Continue until the deed is done or to .

Draw/Mill tappers

  • Codex Shredder - mill each opponent one by one
  • Lore Broker - have everyone draw until they die (use Elixir of Immortality or Psychic Spiral to ensure you don't die to draw)
  • Kwain, Itinerant Meddler - draw your deck to find a mill tapper (ideally Codex Shredder - You can play it with Lotus Petal, Mox Amber, or Chrome Mox if you have no mana available. The ideal play would be Chrome Mox, then generate infinite colored mana. Otherwise, use Lotus Petal into Sol Ring, into Arcane Signet or Fellwar Stone, then generate infinite mana.)
  • Temple Bell - same as Lore Broker
  • Vantress Gargoyle - Mill everyone simultaneously
  • Bonus: Equipped Paradise Mantle or any mana rock - infinite mana

Obscure cards/seemingly odd includes explained

  • Snapcaster Mage: Snappy acts simply as another value piece, getting back removal or mill cards from the yard. Sun Titan synergizes well here if Snapcaster is threatening to the table and gets removed.
  • Undead Alchemist: This zombie surprisingly is an all-star in this deck. Since opponents are drawing and discarding or milling so often, you can build a zombie army fairly quickly. I use the zombie army mainly as defense, but their sheer, growing numbers are threatening on the offensive as well.
  • Mind Over Matter: This enchantment allows you to draw your deck by untapping Kwain with each discard. You can draw into answers or other combo pieces.
