Vampires in Modern

As Pioneer is kind of a dying format at the moment, I decided to switch my mono-black Vampires deck to Modern format. The addition of green allows access to Abrupt Decay and Assassin's Trophy, which are probably two of the strongest removals in Modern. Nurturing Peatland can also be used as an extra card draw.

Here is my take on the sideboard:

  • Damping Sphere: tron / storm hate

  • Torpor Orb: it's great against a lot of sweet creatures in Modern like Skyclave Apparition, Seasoned Pyromancer, Primeval Titan, Stoneforge Mystic, Thought-Knot Seer, Thassa's Oracle, Goblin Matron, Goblin Ringleader, etc. I might add a second one in my sideboard in the future, so I automatically sideboard out the 2 Champion of Dusk for 2 Torpor orbs against Goblins, Eldrazi Tron or Death and Taxes.

  • Nihil Spellbomb: uro / kroxa / dredge hate + card draw

  • Plague Engineer: tribal hate

  • Shadow of Doubt: fetch lands / titan / ramp / neobrand hate + card draw

  • Surgical Extraction: dredge / storm / combo decks hate

  • Veil of Summer: mirror / jund / control / discard hate

  • Gatekeeper of Malakir: creatures based decks (especially against the ones that cannot be targeted or are indestructible) hate

  • Force of Despair: great against Collected Company, Aether vial and aggro decks

Let me know in the comments if you have any suggestion.

I replaced the Murderous Rider with 1 copy of Dusk Legion Zealot : there are already enough removals in the deck and it lacked of card draw. Zealot is also a vampire, so it synergizes better with the deck.
Now with 3 copies of Inquisition of Kozilek instead of 2 and 3 copies of Thoughtseize instead of 4. It is more balanced, you get the Inquisition more likely in your opening hand or during the first turns. Also there a lot of 3 CMC key pieces in Modern decks.
I replaced the Dusk Legion Zealot with a fourth copy of Vampire Nocturnus because this guy is an absolute powerhouse. In the sideboard, I added two copies of Gatekeeper of Malakir, which is a great option to play against heavy creatures decks, combo decks using Giver of Runes or Infect, Bogles, etc., any deck using protection or hexproof on creatures basically. In order to make room for this addition, I removed 1 copy of Surgical Extraction and 1 copy of Shadow of Doubt, which are great but not as indispensable. By adding Gatekeeper of Malakir, I am questioning if the 2 Plague Engineer are still necessary, but we will see. I am also thinking about playing Damnation... but I will playtest this version for a couple of weeks and let you know how it goes.
I removed the 3 Bloodghast, even though they are resilient, they can't block and the sacrifice synergy with Sorin is too occasional. I also removed Drana, Liberator of Malakir because I found it a little slow and situational. I replaced them with 2 Cordial Vampire and 2 Nighthawk Scavenger. This updated version of the deck needs some testing, but I think my board will be more threatening.

In the sideboard :

-2 Duress

+1 Force of Despair

+1 Torpor Orb
