"The locks on the cages of the damned are opened with keys of marrow, sinew, and blood."

The flavor text of Demon of Death's Gate is the essential plot of the deck, offering marrow sinew and blood to unleash the demons.

In my opinion this deck is about as black as black gets in Magic. Paying life and creatures for more powerful creatures and card advantage. I really enjoy playing this deck. I started out building this a while back because I love demons and saw the potential of the nastiness Shadowborn Apostle and Demon of Death's Gate would play into each other and then swinging with the demon and casting Tainted Strike when he goes unblocked for the instant kill.

This deck has a lot of synergy to it from the times I've played it. Using shadowborn with Xathrid Necromancer (or multiple of them even) and then casting a Demon of Death's Gate allows you to receive at least 3 zombie tokens, then if you have a card:quest for the grave lord at the time of that cast, you also get a 5/5 zombie giant. Dark Prophecy works well with all of the sacrifice as it will allow you card advantage, and if you cast Altar's Reap while the enchantment is out, you'll get 3 cards.

One of the real stars of the show is Gray Merchant of Asphodel with all of the devotion you develop. For a deck that requires you to pay so much life for card advantage and powerful creatures, I have often ended up with quite a lot of life through the merchant and Essence Harvest on Demon of Death's Gate .

Crypt of Agadeem works well with this deck as well, when you start throwing a bunch of shadowborns into the graveyard, it can give you some incredible mana ramping, which in a deck that mostly requires little mana, can lead to large casts and triggers after trigger of whatever you have on the board.

Thanks for looking at my deck. Build it yourself and have fun with it, I'm not sure what your play group is like, but this deck always is a good time against mine, and is a quick answer to a speedy lifegain deck. Any input is welcome and if you enjoy it don't forget to upvote!

After some playing I felt that Xathrid Necromancer somewhat slowed down the overall aggressiveness of the deck. I also decided that I needed some more late game fallback in case the Demon of Death's Gate didn't pan out, so after going through my card stash and coming across two unused Harvester of Souls I figured I would throw them in, as well as 2 Skirsdags for a hopeful stronger late-game standing. I then included some more Shadowborns in place of some other cards that I wasn't using as much. The end result is I've had this deck work much more efficiently against my play group.
