Kess Storm seems to be the more popular way to build Kess, and it's probably even the strongest way, but Storm isn't my style. My Kess deck is styled as a Grixis spellslinger deck. It's more control than anything. It takes advantage of the ability to reuse instants and sorceries. That being said, the deck doesn't necessarily need Kess to win. The ability to reuse each instant and sorcery is pure value, but that's not actually how the deck wins.

There are a number of wincons in the deck.

Primary Wincon: Commander's Insight , Blue Sun's Zenith , Stroke of Genius , Banefire , Comet Storm , and Fireball + Dualcaster Mage , Increasing Vengeance , Wild Ricochet , Nivix Guildmage , Primal Wellspring , Pyromancer's Goggles , Rootha, Mercurial Artist , and Swarm Intelligence . Any of the former spells with a few of the latter is how the deck is supposed to win.

Secondary Wincons

  1. Laboratory Maniac with Commander's Insight , Blue Sun's Zenith , or Stroke of Genius .

  2. Zaffai, Thunder Conductor with my X spells to possibly burn players to death via her triggered ability.

  3. Rite of Replication + Dualcaster Mage infinite combo. It works even better if Zaffai is in play so I can scry an infinite number of times and make infinite elemental tokens. Even without Dualcaster Mage, Rite of Replication can be a wincon by itself, depending on what my opponents have in play. I won one game by copying Rite of Replication and making ten token copies of an opponent's Noxious Gearhulk . In theory, I could make ten or more copies of Magus of the Wheel and deck everyone in one turn if I was able to untap with them.

To get far enough into a game to make winning a possibility, I use Propaganda to keep more aggressive decks at bay, Archfiend of Depravity to give any other player from having much of a board presence, and Sheoldred, Whispering One to put additional pressure on players, along with recurring my few but important creatures. Aetherspouts , Blasphemous Act , Coastal Breach , Crush of Tentacles , Devastation Tide , Perplexing Test , River's Rebuke , Vandalblast , and Wash Out further keep other players from being able to build a threatening board presence. I can also softlock players out by using Archaeomancer to reuse most of my bounce spells over and over, though that'll guarantee me a place as Archenemy once someone draws into removal or a counterspell.
