Commander / EDH BGW (Abzan, Junk) Infect Proliferate Toxic

MTGBurgeoning

Vishgraz, the Doomhive debuted as the secondary Commander option in the Corrupting Influence preconstructed EDH deck from Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Vishgraz is a 3/3 Phyrexian Insect with menace and toxic 1 for two and Abzan colors, which is one white, one black, and one green mana. When Vishgraz enters the battlefield, we create three 1/1 colorless Phyrexian Mite artifact creature tokens with toxic 1 that cannot block. Vishgraz also gets +1 +1 for each poison counter our opponents have. Before we continue, let's distinguish the difference between the toxic and infect mechanics. When a creature with toxic deals combat damage to a player, that player gets a number of poison counters equal to that creature's toxic level. Combat damage dealt to creatures by a creature with toxic is just combat damage, and nothing more. When a creature with infect deals damage to a player, instead of losing life, that player gets a number of poison counters equal to the amount of damage dealt. Damage dealt to creatures by a creature with infect gets -1 -1 counters instead of damage, and these -1 -1 counters remain on that creature indefinitely. Note that infect delivers poison counters and -1 -1 counters through any type of damage, and not just combat damage As a quick example between attacking with a creature with toxic vs. attacking with a creature with infect, an unblocked 3/3 creature with toxic 1 would deal three points of damage to defending player, and then that player also gets one poison counter. An unblocked 3/3 creature with infect produces a different result. Although the defending player does not lose any life, they will get three poison counters instead. As we can see, toxic is a nerfed version of infect, but both mechanics deliver poison counters to our opponents, and a player who has ten or more poison counters loses the game. It's easier to knock an opponent out of the game with ten poison counters than it is to defeat them with Commander damage or by lowering their life total down to zero, and as we will demonstrate during the following deck tech, this build is capable of winning game after game through poison counters, Commander damage, and/or combat.
